Golf Book Review: 365 Golf Tips & Tricks From the Pros

There are many studies which prove that short study sessions allow the pupil to retain more than long study sessions. It is better to, for instance, study in 20 minute segments and break three times than to study a straight hour. The starts and stops are where most of the information is retained. That’s what makes a format like 365 Golf Tips & Tricks From the Pros so great. It is 592 pages, but there’s no way on earth I’d read it from start to finish. I’ll take a tip and read it with the thoughts of really trying to absorb it and work the concept into my game or my practice.

Review: Arnold Palmer Drive – Half & Half Sports Performance Drink

Arnold Palmer DriveI’m a big Arnold Palmer fan, both the drink and the player. The drink, for those who don’t know what it is, is half iced tea and half lemonade.  I’ve consumed countless gallons of Arnie’s iced tea and lemonade, made by Arizona.  I was thrilled to get the chance to “test” some of his new line of half and half performance drink.

In addition to the great flavor of the original Arnold Palmer, Drive helps with focus and recovery by including “richly packed vitamins, coconut water, super fruit extracts, antioxidants, amino acids and natural caffeine.”

On The Course

I’ll do anything to save a few strokes off my game.  The lampshade incident was a failure but Drive may be a great compliment.  My unscientific test took place over 18 holes.  I played nine while drinking water and nine while drinking Arnie’s Drive.  The results?  I shot three strokes better on the nine when I drank the drive beverage!  There you have it.  Based on that, you should be able to shave off six strokes per 18 holes!

Conclusion

I can’t take any chances.  I’ll be downing my first sip of Drive 15 minutes before my 8:30 a.m. money-game tee time this Sunday.  If I end up with more cash in my wallet after the round than when I started it, I’ll be stocking up on a few cases of Drive for the summer.

Golf Equipment Review: Cobra Amp Cell Adjustable Driver

I may wear some Puma apparel once in a while, but I don’t quite dress as colorfully as Rickie Fowler.   Now my driver is as colorful as Rickie’s though, except mine is red while his is orange.  I’m talking about the new Cobra Amp Cell driver.  Let’s take a look.

Cobra Amp Cell Adjustable Driver

Amp Cell Driver Overview

The Amp Cell Driver is a new adjustable driver from Cobra.  Cobra is a subdivision of Puma now.  With the adjustability of the club, players are able to dial in the perfect setting for their swing as I did.  Once I found that magic setting the club went straight into my gamer bag.

Features

The Amp Cell has six separate settings via Cobra’s “MyFly” technology.  No the technology has nothing to do with the golfer’s pants zipper…  The loft on the Amp Cell driver is adjustable from 8.5 degrees to 11.5 degrees.  8.5-11.5 degrees is a huge range which is very beneficial to the average amateur player for fine tuning the right loft for his/her swing.   Since this is not the “pro” model, adjustable settings are either square or draw biased.  There are no open or fade settings.   Works for me.  I’m not a slicer but when I set it to a draw setting I can eliminate all the hazards on the right side of my home course and trust me, there are plenty.

Cobra employs “Smart Pad” technology on the bottom of the club rather than a clunky adjustable sole plate.  Smart Pad technology assures that the face is square at address no matter what the loft is.

“SmartPad technology delivers a square face at address regardless of loft setting and still allows for workability to slightly open or close the face as desired.” ~Cobra Website

The face of the Amp Cell driver utilizes “E9 face technology with dual roll.”  This technology means the face has an elliptical face which produces better distance and accuracy on mis-hits above, below or to the side of center.

Colors

The Amp Cell driver is available in four colors: white, red, blue, orange.

Specs

  • Lofts: 8.5°, 9.5°, 9.5° Draw, 10.5°, 10.5° Draw, 11.5°
  • Length: 45.75″
  • Swing weight: D4
  • Stock shafts: lite, regular, stiff, extra stiff
  • Right/Left handed models available
  • Custom options are available

Head Cover

Having worked for and owned a tiny tiny percentage of a company that makes probably the best head covers out there, I’m always critical of head covers.  I’m not a fan of the sock type where the user has to spend 10 minutes trying to fit a cantaloupe sized head through an opening that is 1/5 the size.  So that part of this head cover gets my goat sometimes.  There are also two sections of the cover which open to the driver inside, leaving it vulnerable to damage in the trunk.  Grade on the head cover is a C.

Shaft

The shaft on my Amp Cell is a Fujikura Fuel shaft.  I’ve got two clubs with this shaft in the bag and I love it.  Great choice.

Great color, red for my Utah Utes. Click to zoom.

On The Course

I spent quite a while on the range the first day I tried out the Amp Cell.  I killed it right out of the box with the stock setting which in this case was 9.5° with a draw.  I almost didn’t mess around with the adjustability because I hit it so well, but I did try the different settings.  I tried all the settings from 8.5°, which looks intimidating at address, to 11.5.  Most of the settings I was able to hit fairly well except the 8.5.  I’m normally a low trajectory player and when I got to the 10.5 draw setting the launch angle and distance was fantastic.  Long and high drives with a small draw which ran when they landed.  Just what I’ve been looking for.  That’s the setting I’ve kept in the bag since then.

Distance is awesome with this club.  In the past couple of weeks I’ve hit the longest drives in years on several of my home holes.  I’m hitting approaches from places I haven’t seen in several seasons and reaching the par-5’s in two much easier and with long-to-mid irons instead of woods or hybrids.  My driving average this year is easily 25-30 longer and sometimes when I really catch it I’m 50 yards ahead of last year.  Needless to say my opponents are envious.

Conclusion

I’m really enjoying swinging the Amp Cell and I’m crushing it.  With the proper setting for my swing, my accuracy is as good as always.  My distance is increased dramatically.  I don’t switch gamer drivers often but I couldn’t help changing this time.  This one is in the bag indefinitely.  If you get the chance to demo an Amp Cell don’t miss out on it!
