Gary Player’s 52nd Masters Tourament is this year.  It will be his final appearance.  Gary won the Masters (checking my Masters coffee cup) in 1961, 1974 and 1978.

Player:

“I can’t begin to express the fond memories I have of the Masters and everything that comes with it… slipping into the Green Jacket; the Southern hospitality of the patrons; the interviews under the oak tree, the rigorous competition; the Champions Dinner; the roars on Amen Corner; the drive down Magnolia Lane. I’m going to miss walking up the 18th fairway each year, but my time has come to say goodbye as a competitor.”

It’s difficult for current golf fans to imagine the great rivalry between the Big Three..Palmer..Nicklaus and Player. Though the spin control has moderated the image today, Nicklaus had VERY FEW fans in the early 1960s and was constantly derided on the course as Fat Jack.
Player won Majors on a variety of courses under every imaginable kind of condition. I saw him win a British Open in wind and cold that was unbelievable. A very classy gentleman
and endlessly enthusiastic. Came basically from nothing..had none of the great advantages of Palmer and certainly Nicklaus.
