Tiger’s caddie Steve Williams calls the kettle black

Tiger Woods’ caddie Steve Williams has been “dealt with” by Tiger regarding some inappropriate comments he made about Phil Mickelson.  At a charity event, Williams made the following comment:

“I wouldn’t call Mickelson a great player … ‘cause I hate the prick.”

I’d say this is about the most obvious case of “pot calling the kettle black” I’ve ever seen.

The next day Williams told a newspaper that he was simply being honest:

“I was simply honest and said they (Mickelson and Woods) don’t get along.  You know what it’s like. You’re at a charity event and you have a bit of fun.  I don’t particularly like the guy (Mickelson) myself. He pays me no respect at all and hence I don’t pay him any respect. It’s no secret we don’t get along either.”

Well Steve, respect is earned.  And comments like that are certainly not the way to earn respect.

Phil responded with a super classy and wise statement:

“After seeing Steve Williams’ comments, all I could think of was how lucky I am to have a class act like (caddie) Bones (Jim Mackay) on my bag and representing me.”

I do Believe that Ol’ Stevie Boy is not the nicest caddy on Tour. Phil Had his day back when, Trashing Tiger. Saying His equipment was inferior and that Tiger was mad that he (Phil) was out driving him. But,everyone knew that Tiger was playing the shortest shaft in the game @43.5 steel shaft to boot. Everyone knows that Phil was a prick on Tour and that the “extra smiling” he came up with was to quiet that rumor..On the other side..Stevie should not run his mouth when he’s behind a player like Tiger or for that matter any TOUR Player. Some people think they are Tuff because no one will TRY them. Stevie would have his mouth shut for talking Sheet like that in my neighborhood. Maybe its all hype for us the get that Rivalry everyone is looking for on Tour going. I bet its a Media Play all the way…. Phil,Tiger,Stevie and Ol’bones are sitting around going Cha Ching!!!!!

Steve W’s comments are self explanatory. Phil’s comments about inferior equipment are right on as Mr. Burgess explains and as Phil later explained: steel shaft, shorter, etc. While I am no Phil phan, er, fan, he did say even if he won 7 more majors and 25 more tour events he wouldn’t even be near Tiger Woods. I would say that is paying the gentleman named Tiger Woods a lot of respect by putting both of their records in perspective. The reality is that it is too bad that golf is drifting into the public trash talking that has long since been the norm for other sports and our culture in general. For some time, golf alone has been the sole holdout for gentlemen to speak graciously about one’s competitors and the game. I only hope it lasts a little longer. Thank you Mr. Nicklaus, Mr. Palmer, Mr. Watson, etc. for always taking the high road.

    • Excellent comment lazybones. I do think there was some implied brand slamming when Phil made the inferior equipment comment. That being said, that was a long time ago.

I don’t like the fact, as you mentioned, that golf is becoming more like the NBA or something where there is trash talking. I also don’t like the fact that the fans are turning into yelling idiots with “you da man” and “go in the hole” after every swing.
