In case you didn’t know it, you can catch a ton of extra live coverage of the PGA Championship at PGA.com. I’m watching Anthony Kim and Adam Scott right now.

It isn’t pretty for Adam Scott. He’s at +12.

Speaking of pretty (or not), I just saw my good friend John Kim (not related to Anthony, but he wishes) on PGA.com’s live coverage! I know a famous guy! John is in the middle of the image below.

Tiger leads after round one of the PGA Championship

Tiger Woods doesn’t typically start out fast in majors. Today he did with a 67, which leads by one over Padraig Harrington. Tiger and Padraig started out where they left off last week I suppose.

Tiger is about as good of a front runner as there’s ever been so it will be interesting to see if he holds the lead. He hasn’t had any wild swings like I saw at the British.

Despite being the longest major championship in history, they’re posting tons of red numbers right now at Hazeltine.

I’ll be watching all day tomorrow. Will Tiger hold on for his third win in a row?

My game may have come out of summer hybernation

I felt some signs that my game would be close to returning to form. There are many factors involved in this transition from complete friggin’ hacker to decent amateur player.

I just came off my two highest rounds of the year. Those were on a very tough and foreign course 2300 miles from home. And my back was still recovering from one of the worst tweaks I’ve ever had. So I was hardly even bending down to read putts. Hell, I even four putted on the mega fast greens. That was the first putt I’ve had since January 2005. I’m serious. I still remember it, #3 at Sunbrook in St. George, Utah.

Reason 1 for my recent hack fests: I was coming off an injury. Reason 2: swing changes.

I’m also in the midst of gaining more confidence and comfort in some major swing changes. My coach/pro gave me a big swing lesson and I’m struggling to break old habits and implement the new moves and positions.

My posture is better. My release is still under construction, but when I get it right it is awesome, producing much higher ball speed and distance. I haven’t looked at it, but I think my swing plane is better too since my poster and positions are better.

Yesterday I shot 37 on the front and had some mental breakdowns on the back. But I knew that my swing was on the verge of a recovery. I could feel actual golf shots happening. I hit a six iron from 187 to about 3 feet, over a tree. Haven’t felt that “feeling” of compressing and seeing a ball fly like that in at least two months.

Well maintained equipment is a big factor

I recently put some new shoes on my feet, the new FootJoy Icons. I also regripped all my clubs. My spikes on my old shoes were worn, and my old grips were very bad. I seriously believe having better traction and stability in my swing, along with a better grip on my clubs, is playing a big factor in hitting better shots. It did take me about two rounds to get used to having so much traction. I was hooking shots for a bit, but I’ve fixed that for the most part.

So today I shot a 74, back on track with what my “old” 1-2 handicap dictated. Even though I shot that 74, I had to shell out some dough to my pal Arnie. Despite bogeying the last hole (and I won a press on that one), he shot 70!

A while back I played some golf with my friend Chris Bystrianski from MyGolfBook. Afterward we sat down, had some frosty beverages and he asked me a few questions. That interview is now posted in the first edition of MyGolfBook’s quarterly newsletter!

Thanks for honoring me with your first interview!

Review: DivPro divot tool

I’ve been using a very cool and shiny divot tool lately called DivPro. As you can see in the photos, this tool has a unique shape to it and it does quite a bit more than just fix ball marks.

Divot Tool

Of course the main reason to own/use a DivPro is fixing ball marks. Please folks, fix your ball marks. If I have the time, I fix 5-10 marks on every green. I believe the golf gods will award you with made putts if you fix enough ball marks.

The DivPro does a great job of fixing ball marks. The long prongs of the tool and the angle the tool is bent allow for plenty of leverage, even on the hardest of putting surfaces.

Ball Marker

The DivPro comes with a magnetic ball marker, which is nice.

The ball marker comes default with DivPro’s logo on it, but custom logos are available. If you are looking for a classy and unique golf tool to put your brand on for giveaways, golf courses, businesses or tee prizes, your logo on the DivPro’s ball marker is a great idea.

Bottle Opener

I’ve successfully snuck a couple of cold bottles of Corona onto the course. One problem, Corona is not a twist off cap! I’ve run into this situation a few times and had to smash the cap against the golf cart or a rock to get the cap off. With the DivPro’s bottle opener, I am no longer stuck with that problem and I don’t have to worry about breaking my precious Corona’s bottle.

Cigar/Club Holder

There are many devices and ways people use to keep their club grips from touching the wet ground. I’ve reviewed several golf gadgets which do just that job. The problem is that they’re not convenient.

With the DivPro’s built in club holder, I can easily keep my grips off the wet ground. No more slippery grips and wasted shots. The club holder can also double as a cigar holder. It may actually be more important to keep the cigar dry than the grips!

Critiques

My only critique of the DivPro is the size. This unit is much longer than a standard divot tool. The length does make the ease of use and functionality much better, but it does make it a bit difficult in your pocket. Sometimes the tool gets stuck in my pocket or jabs me. This isn’t a deal breaker and I’ll exchange digging a little harder in my pocket a couple of times per round for all the benefits of the tool.

Conclusion

The DivPro is a great divot tool with many convenient extra bonus features.  It performs perfectly for fixing ball marks as seen in the image below.
