I started working on moving the web site to my new, bigger server at 8:45am Friday morning. I first started with the 19,000 images and converting the image gallery. I’ve been working on file transfers, software upgrades, server configurations etc, and waiting for the site’s DNS (tech term) to resolve to the new server. In other words, waiting for the internet to become aware the HOG’s web server is in a new location.
Now that I’m writing this, it does appear that the DNS has propagated and I can now work on bug fixes and such. The major part of the move is now over.
Welcome to the other side…
Wish me luck. I’m migrating the site to a new and bigger dedicated server. It is about growth and having room to grow. The new server has NINE times the processing power as the old one and twice the storage space. There are many dozens of back end features which blow the doors off the old one as well.
Big Deal
Moving a simple small web site is not too much trouble. But this blog has over 4000 posts, a large golf image gallery with 18,671 images, thousands of comments and such. It is going to take quite a bit of work to move the site over to a new setup and make sure it all works. When it does, things should fly here. It is sort of like upgrading from persimmon woods to today’s 460cc titanium metals.
This is a move in the right direction, allowing for speed and storage space for the future as the site grows.
Perhaps the biggest PITA is the image gallery. Unfortunately the new server is so new that the old gallery software is incompatible. I’m in the midst of migrating all 18,671 photos from the old gallery to the new. It has been going since 8:45am (it is now 5:21pm). The new gallery will be nice yes, but I’m very worried that many of the linked images and links to galleries in my posts will go bad. There are thousands of them. If that happens, articles like course reviews or golf equipment reviews may end up with broken images. I hope to figure that out.
Patience
Be patient this weekend. HOG may be intermittent and may actually go down for a while. When you see that happening you’ll know I’ve got my golf web geek cap on and I’m slaving away transferring files, databases and reconfiguring code to work with the new server.
I had the pleasure of putting into play yesterday the new orange version of the Kentwools, which are fantastic. Even though the temps were between 95-100 degrees I felt fine in the foot department. The new orange version is available in “tour profile” for men and women, and women’s low profile skinny. The addition of the orange line brings their total tour golf sock line colors to seven.
I’ve reviewed Kentwool Tour golf socks previously, so I’m not going to go into super detail about them here. Check out my Kentwool Tour golf sock review if you want more information.
All the major golf on TV this week is outside of the continental 48. The ladies are in France, the seniors are in Scotland and the regular PGA Tour players are in Canada, aye?
