Today I’m reviewing a great instructional DVD. I’ve now watched the entire two disc set “About Golf” by Butch Harmon three times. I’ve watched the short game section (4) at least five times, the area I need the most work in. Let’s take a look at the product and what it covers.
About Golf DVD Overview
This DVD set covers literally every aspect of the golf swing and the game imaginable. There’s even a section on anger management.

Quality Content
The lessons Butch gives in this two disc set are very well done and very educational. Butch covers everything from the very basics that all golfers need, to the fine details of shot making and dealing with trouble on the course. Harmon is very clear and descriptive in his concepts, setup and execution. He really stresses the basics, which are so obvious but so often overlooked.
Quality Production
Before turning golf web geek, I worked as an engineer in the audio/video field for 25 years. I know good and bad production. This DVD is produced, filmed, edited and packaged with the highest quality and attention to detail. The audio is great, the video quality is fantastic and so are the supporting graphics and materials. This is a top notch production.
Star Power
My favorite section other than the short game section is “From Good To Great.” In that section big name stars like Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Dustin Johnson etc., talk about their game and how Butch helped them. Very interesting to know that even Ernie Els was aligning some 15 yards right of target with a 7-iron and had to make all sorts of other manipulations in his swing to compensate. Once again, going back to the basics and checking alignment, helped Ernie.
Putting It Together
There’s so much material in this DVD. I’ve developed a couple of ideas on how to best take advantage. First I might pick one lesson inside a section, like hitting the stinger for instance, and work on that for a range session. I’ll pick another section or subject for the next range session.
The other way I use the DVD is running a section over and over on my home computer, like pitching or chipping, to pound the concepts into my cranium.
Conclusion
This DVD is fantastic for golfers of all ability levels. At $89 retail, this program costs as much as one or two lessons, but there are 100’s of lessons and tips one could learn from. Whether you are a pro, low single digit like me, or a beginner, this DVD is a great resource for learning and improving your golf game.
I’ve been doing a lot of apparel reviews this summer but this one is a little different. The golf shirt by Energy Athletic has something the others don’t, ion power. Lets take a look.
Energy Athletic Golf Shirt Features
Energy Athletic’s polos are made from 95% Polyester and 5% spandex. Yay! No cotton! I’m not a cotton fan with the shrinking and the wrinkling. With these materials the shirt doesn’t lose shape and is ready to wear right out of the wash.
The fabric of these polos is embedded with Energy Athletic’s exclusive “IonX Ionized treatment.” According to Energy Athletic, the negative ions give you more power.
“In fact, a study conducted on 12 rugby players to test ‘discrete physiological parameters associated with rugby’ has shown a measurable increase in average power when wearing IonX during repetitive, short duration, high intensity exercise, very similar to movements used throughout the golf swing.”
Looks/Comfort
Negative ions aside, the shirt is a fine looking one. The polo could stand on its own on looks alone.
The shirt is also very comfortable and the fit is great. During the golf swing there are no tight spots or binding. No restrictions or irritations.
Sizes/Colors
The short sleeve version comes in nine colors while the long sleeve comes in three.
Sizes are available in small, medium, large, extra large and double extra large.
On The Course
The first round I had the shirt in play was crazy. My negative ion powered round featured four birdies and a solid, low round. Given that alone I felt that perhaps there was something real behind the negative ion power. The rest of my group had a ton of birdies as well. In fact, the foursome had around 14 of them. Wow. That made me think that perhaps the negative ions worked for me, but also were affecting my opponents. Well, that’s a problem. I need the negative ion power working for me, not my opponent…
I wore the shirt a couple of days ago. Had a great round of 72 with three birds on the back nine. The rest of my group: 71, 75, 75. See?
I should also mention that the shirt was great in the heat a couple of days ago. Temp was around 100F and I wasn’t overly hot or sweaty.
Conclusion
The Energy Athletic polo is great, regardless of whether you believe the negative ions do anything for your golf game. It is good looking, comfortable and breaths well in hot temperatures. I just wish they’d figure out how to point the negative ions just at me so I’m the only one getting their benefit, and not my opponents. I’m standing farther away from them now, just in case that makes a difference. 🙂

My first name is Anthony but my last name isn’t Weiner…
I had a hard time explaining to my 78 year old neighbor lady what I was doing in the back yard. I was taking pictures of myself, in my undies. The lighting is so much better outside. Her yelping mutt sure got all riled up. Ever since that day she stopped bringing her tasty homemade cupcakes over. Not sure why.
I had an equally difficult time trying to explain to the wife what I was doing when she walked in on me editing said photos in Photoshop. “What the hell are you doing?” she asked. “I’m editing photos of my performance pouch,” I responded. That quick and confusing response was enough to stop her dead in her tracks…
Ruez Performance Underwear Overview
So what is Ruez Performance Underwear and how can it help my golf game? Let’s look at some of the features these undies have.
First and foremost, Ruez’s undies employ a design called a performance pouch. The performance pouch is designed to separate the golf club from the golf balls, if you know what I mean. This is done with a couple of layers of fabric, with a hole on the closest layer for putting the male organ through. Keeping the performance package (also known as “sparky”) separated from the body helps “bring a clever, comfortable end to chafing, sweating and adjusting.” Here’s what the Ruez web site says about it:
“This innovative underwear solution is designed to separate and protect male organs during performance events including running, cycling, triathlons, Ironman and more.”
“RUEZ is designed with an innovative Performance Pouch that separates and protects men’s body parts during high-endurance but are comfortable enough to be worn all day.”
A 2nd pocket in the shorts, the personal pocket, is designed to keep valuables close and under gym shorts so they don’t fall out during a workout.
The undies are made of an 85% polyester material which is moisture wicking, with 15% elasticity for a little compression.
Models
Ruez Performance Underwear comes in black and is available in two styles: Boxer and Brief.
Sizes
Small: 26-30
Medium: 30-34
Large: 34-38
Extra-Large: 38-42
On The Course
All the talk about performance pouches and such is great around the coffee table, but do these undies really do what they say? I’ve played some test rounds here in temperatures between 90-104 and here are my personal conclusions. I’m sure other men’s results may vary as much as their private parts vary…
Boxers
In the more information than you need to know category, I’m a boxer kind of guy. I don’t have any tighty-whities in the drawer. So naturally I tested out the boxer version (first image) first. These boxers though, have a tight fit around my muscular Greek thighs. So muscular… I didn’t like that at first. I’m used to loose boxers. But as the day and the golf round wore on, I began to like the feel of the compression on my gluteus maximus and especially my hamstrings.
When I put the boxers on the first time I made sure to put my performance package through the hole in the first layer and into the performance pouch. It felt a bit strange. Most men lean one way or another, so I set up in the regular left position. As the day wore on and the round progressed, I found myself noticing that my performance package was not staying in the performance pouch. I found that during a round, the performance package can vary in size and position. Sort of a strange thing to suddenly “realize.” On several occasions I found that I had to move the performance package back through the hole in layer one, back into the pouch. This went on quite a bit. Unfortunately I found myself “adjusting” far more than I would with regular boxers.
It is tough to concentrate on golf shots, and even tougher when you’re pondering how and why your performance package moves around and varies in size so much, and having to “move the couch into the corner.” In the end, the boxers were a no-go. Too much fidgeting. Just hope the neighbor lady didn’t see that too…
Briefs
I wasn’t terribly excited (no pun intended) to put the Ruez briefs in play so I put it off for a while. Based on the boxer experience I was expecting another day of fidgeting and “performance package pondering” on the course. I put the briefs on in the morning, put the performance package into the performance pouch and got dressed. From that point on, I was very surprised to find that the sparky was cooperating. No movement. No repositioning. No distractions.
Yesterday, with the briefs in play, was very hot and humid. It was so hot that my hat was soaked and I had to put on a golf glove. I never wear golf gloves unless my hands are so sweaty that I can’t keep a good grip on the club. I’m happy to report that the performance pouch seemed to do a good job. No swamp crotch, which is always good.
Conclusion
My conclusion is a bit of good and bad. The boxers didn’t work, but the briefs did. On the boxers, it could be a size issue or perhaps the design/cut just doesn’t line up with my anatomy. But as I mentioned, I did like the compression of the boxers on the hammies.
The briefs did deliver as promised and made a believer out of me.
