Alright.  I’ve finally completed my reviews of the courses I played at Treetops in northern Michigan. Links to each of the reviews is at the end of this article under the “related” heading.  Now it is time to talk about where to stay when traveling to the quaint town of Gaylord, Michigan, home of Treetops golf courses and the Treetops Resort.

Lodging

My focus for this review is the Treetops Lodge (pictured above), where I stayed for part of my time in Michigan a few weeks ago.

The Treetops Lodge features 238 guest rooms, Lodge Queen and Lodge King flavors.  Both room types feature a very nice patio/balcony, big screen TV, leather furniture, jetted tub and “rustic” accents.  I’ll try to convey what “rustic” means later in the post.

There are also “Inn” rooms coming in Standard and Deluxe options.  The Standard Inn rooms offer two double sized beds while the Inn Deluxe rooms features two queen sized beds, a refrigerator and a small sitting area.

The resort offers condominiums with two and three bedrooms, and three bedroom townhouses as well as individual, free standing chalets.  The condos and townhouses come in two and three bedroom flavors.  Chalets offer queen sized beds and their own putting green.

Eat, Drink And Be Merry

Up the hill from the lodge I stayed in is the top of the ski lifts where the dining and bar resides.

Treetops Sports Bar

The Sports Bar is a very happening place with TV screens to pick up the game and pool tables. At a beer a day, it might take close to six months to sample every flavor. There’s a good “bar food” menu at the Sports Bar and the pizza is exceptional. I recommend the Michigan Wild Mushroom Pizza. I may schedule a trip back to Treetops just for that pie!

Legends On The Hill is the restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I had some great breakfasts there from eggs to pancakes.  Dinner was great there as well, very hearty with a wide variety of selections.  And the view there is great.

I didn’t manage to sample the goods at Hunter’s Grille.  Hunter’s is a new restaurant which offers a little more upscale dining and wine/spirits elements.

Winter Activities

Treetops offers skiing and snowboarding in the winter.   The Treetops ski resort offers 23 runs, what they call “some of the finest terrain in the Midwest.”  I’m hoping that they’re not including Utah (my home) or Colorado in their “Midwest” classification.   Treetops is about 1200 feet in altitude, while here in Utah our resorts start at 8,000 feet and hit 11,000+.

Other winter activities at Treetops include tubing, dog sledding and the cool “Terrain Park.”  The Terrain Park is an area built for freestyle snowboarding and skiing tricks for beginners through intermediate.

Golf

Treetops offers some of the best golf in the country with courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Tom Fazio and Rick Smith.  See links at the bottom of the article for my reviews of most of the Treetops courses, and other courses in the area.

Treetops Pool

Indoor pool and hot tub. Click to zoom.

Pool/Hot Tub

There’s a pool and two hot tubs in the lodge.  The pool is part inside and part outside.   One hot tub is inside for winter and the other outside.

Gym

Located on the bottom floor of the lodge is a workout gym.  Inside are various machines, weights and training devices which can cover just about any kind of workout.

Spa/Salon

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to squeeze in any spa treatments when I was at Treetops.  But I did wander through the spa and poke around for a few pictures.

The spa offers some interesting packages including “couples” packages, pedicures, manicures, “Man”icure, massages and even scalp treatments.  Next time I’m there I’m looking into the “man”icure.

Other Offerings

If the above items are not enough, the resort also offers banquets, meeting space, catering and weddings.  How perfect!  You could get in quick round of golf before tying the knot…

My Takes

The resort uses words like “comfy” and “rustic.”  I’d translate that to “1980’s decor.”  Though the decor is a little on the 80’s side, it is indeed comfy and cozy.   The rooms are spacious and the air outside clean and crisp.  The food in the restaurants is good and the sports bar is a ton of fun.  The main reason for being there isn’t the lodging, it is the golf, skiing and other activities the great town of Gaylord, Michigan has to offer.
