The new Bridgestone Golf J40 3+ Fairway Wood is a “strong” 3-wood, at 14 degrees. Standard 3-woods are 15 degrees. So this one should, and does, hit the ball a bit farther than a regular 3-wood. I’m not getting any
older younger and my swing speed isn’t increasing it seems, so the extra yards have come in handy.
The 190cc head is made of stainless steel with a very thin top or crown. The head is shallow in profile, meaning it is not very tall from bottom to top. The result is a longer width from heel to toe for added forgiveness.
The center of gravity of this club (CG) promotes higher launch despite the lower loft, longer carry and as a result, longer distance. There’s a cool looking weight near the heel which helps optimize the CG of the club as well, promoting low spin and helping accuracy. The weight, to my knowledge, is not removable or adjustable.

I’m a not only a golf guy, I’m a Mac guy. In fact I have a Mac site and blog called The Mac Space which has been running for years which I work on occasionally. I put way more time in here though. Way more. So being a Mac guy does mean that I have an iPhone. I have many golf apps which have been submitted for review and I really hope to get to them, probably in the winter when there’s less time to play golf. Perhaps the coolest app I’ve gotten though, which I moved to the top of the review queue, is the iPING app and iPING putter iPhone cradle. This is cool! Check it out.
iPING is a two component system for analyzing and improving putting, which also happens to recommend a suitable PING putter when asked. Sure no problem. Love PING putters.
Component one is the iPING cradle, which mounts an iPhone 4 to any putter shaft. Sorry, but if you have any iPhone earlier than a 4 you are out of luck. Time to upgrade.
Component two is the iPhone application itself, which is truly amazing. This is no haphazardly put together rush job. The interface is beautiful and the features many.
The app is free, however the cradle is $30. But if you struggle with your putting, this could be the best $30 you’ve ever spent. (more…)
I sort of blew off reviewing the Power Play Adrenaline Hybrid for a while because it looked so offset. I just figured I’d hook the hell out of it a few times and throw it in the garage. But I finally busted it out and was very surprised to find that I hit it very well, and very straight!

This hybrid’s most noticeable feature is the sole shape. The sole comes to a bit of a point or V shape which really helps get under the ball in either tight lies or in the rough. The sole design is what Hireko calls a “unirail.” Uni means one, so it has one rail.
The head on my 21 degree is offset by 1 degree, and the offset of these hybrids varies based on the model. Check out the chart below for all of the lofts and offsets and more stats.
The weighting of the head is distributed to make the club easy to hit, and make shots fly higher.
The grooves of the club are like an iron’s grooves, rather than like a fairway wood or other hybrids.

Regular HOG readers know I’m not a big fan of knitted head covers. I beat them up fast and they fall apart usually within 3-4 weeks. I do like the old school concept of knitted head covers though, and the fact that the make and model of club are not visible. That helps prevent theft a bit I think.

On The Course
I’ve had two “Golf Sox” knitted head covers in play for a few rounds and these seem a bit more durable than the average ones I’ve tested before. The density of the thread or the knits seems to be a bit higher, which must be the reason.
These covers go on and off the club fairly easily and look cool. The pom poms on the top aren’t overly large like some brands, which helps keep the bulk down. Some pom pom covers have such large pom poms that they fall off when walking or riding the cart.

Back on February 8th, 2009 I posted my review of the Upright Caddy RACR. The Upright Caddy RACR is a four wheeled golf push cart or trolley (UK) which holds the golf bag in an upright position. I also sat down and talked with Andy De Carlo about the unit and gave him a face to face honest assessment of the product and what I would change if I could.
Since then Andy has come up with a newer and better model. The new unit for 2011 is called the RASR and not the RACR. Honestly I don’t get either name as neither is actually a word. In this review I’ll discuss what the strengths of the new RASR are, and also highlight the features which have been improved over the RACR. I’m fairly sure that I’ll get my RACR’s and RASR’s mixed up at some point, so I apologize in advance for that.
Just like the RACR, the RASR holds the golf bag and clubs in a vertical position. This is MUCH better than any other golf push cart on the market, no matter if they’re two, three, four or 84 wheels. Club access and bag access are all far better than carts which hold the bag at an angle. Even using a club towel is easier.
The RASR is light. The frame is made from aluminum tubes, not steel. The RASR’s wheels are a very light plastic.
The cart is easy to push because of the light frame and wheels, and the solid wheelbase.
