Ryan Moore beats Nick Watney in 19 holes. wow. Moore is really playing well this week.
This marks the end of today’s live blogging. See you tomorrow.
JB Holmes takes out Jason Day on the last hole. Picked correctly. JB plays Bubba tomorrow. Battle of the bombers.
Nick Watney made a clutch birdie on 18 to bring the match with Ryan Moore to extra holes. First extra hole match of the day.
Martin Kaymer came on strong late to polish off Hunter Mahan. Wishful thinking pick (Mahan) was incorrect.
JB Holmes and Jason Day are on the 18th all square.
Martin Kaymer moves to 1up with two to play over Mahan.
JB Holmes and Jason Day are all square going into the 18th.
Luke Donald won his match over Manassero 3&2.
I don’t normally post press releases or solicitations from PR firms here. If I did, I’d post about 30-50 per day. But this particular one involves a player who I’ve always been a big fan of, Seve Ballesteros. Seve is lobbying for Madrid’s bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup. Maybe if they win the bid, they can thank me for the help by bringing me to the 2018 RC… One can always dream.
Below is a letter from Seve. Click read more if you can’t see it.
Yesterday’s matches took on quite a different flavor than day one. There were some major demolitions, like the traffic cone (a.k.a. Rickie Fowler) destroying Phil Mickelson. At one point in the round Rickie had five birdies and an eagle.
As far as my picks went yesterday, I had a much worse percentage wise than day one. I went 8/16 and 1/2 on my upset specials. I’m still 5/6 on upset picks though. My two upsets for today are JB Holmes over Jason Day and Rickie Fowler over Matt Kuchar. It is quite tempting to pick Y.E. Yang over Graeme McDowell too but I’ll leave that one.
All the matches will be fun to watch, especially Geoff Ogilvy vs Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler vs Matt Kuchar. Hunter Mahan vs the only #1 seed left Martin Kaymer will be no slouch either.
Today’s matches and my picks
Nick Watney vs Ryan Moore – Watney
Matteo Manassero vs Luke Donald – Donald
Rickie Fowler vs Matt Kuchar – Fowler
Graeme McDowell vs YE Yang – McDowell
Martin Kaymer (the only #1 seed left) vs Hunter Mahan – Mahan
Ben Crane vs Miguel A. Jimenez – Damn this is a tough one. I want Jimenez but Crane is hot. Jimenez
Geoff Ogilvy vs Bubba Watson – Bubba
Jason Day vs JB Holmes – Holmes
Accenture Match Play Friday TV Schedule
Today’s matchplay television coverage will be on Golf Channel from 2-6PM Eastern time. If you are setting your DVR, extend it because the broadcasts have been going long.
Martin Kaymer had a chance to win on 18 with a 15 foot birdie putt. Kaymer and Justin Rose are going to extra holes. First match today after about a million yesterday.
Hunter Mahan thought he’d made birdie to go 1up on 17 over Robert Karlsson, but it slid off. But Karlsson missed his par putt to give Mahan a 1up lead going into the 18th.
The only #1 seed left is all square on the 18th tee: Martin Kaymer vs Justin Rose.
Robert Karlsson and Hunter Mahan are all square with two to play.
Geoff Ogilvy knocked out the Tiger killer Thomas Bjorn 1up.
Nick Watney knocks out the world #1 ranked Lee Westwood on the 18th hole.
Luke Donald closed out Eduardo Molinari on the 17th hole.
Bubba Watson closed out Mark Wilson 6&5.
Jimenez wins 4&2 over Palmer.
Rickie Fowler closed out Phil Mickelson 6&5. That is a butt kicking.
Miguel Angel Jimenez is 3up through 14 holes over Ryan Palmer.
Lee Westwood is 2down through 10 to Nick Watney.
