This morning I had fun doing an appearance on CBS Sports Talk Radio 1700 The Champ on the Jimmy B & TC Show. 1700 The Champ is based in Des Moines, Iowa. Our subject of discussion was the Open Championship and the win by Iowa native Zach Johnson. Obviously they’re super stoked about that. It was fun to talk golf over my morning coffee with Jimmy B and TC (Jim Brinson and Trent Condon). When the podcast of today’s show becomes available I’ll post a link to it.
This was the second appearance I made on the show. Last week we did an Open Championship preview which went quite well. Tooting my own horn (beep beep), I have to mention that in the preview for the Open I expressed my doubt that Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson would make the cut in the Open. They did not. A broken clock is right twice a day, assuming it isn’t a military clock. Here’s a link to the podcast of the Open preview show.
Thanks to my new pals Jimmy B and TC for the opportunity. We will be doing the same gig before and after the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
As a result of my writing, photography, and social media on Sand Hollow I met golf course architect Andy Staples. Since 2010 Andy and I have been talking about doing an interview, and I finally set it up! I used the new (to me at least) Google Plus “Hangouts On Air” feature. This is a cool live online video chat which then immediately produces a YouTube video of the event. This is exactly what I was looking for to pursue one of my goals for this golf blog in 2014, more interviews of interesting people in the golf industry.
Check out the interview with Andy Staples below and pay close attention to the comments regarding conservation and energy management, and how they greatly improve a golf course’s bottom line.
There are a couple of small issues with this video. First, my audio echoes. Not sure why. Fortunately Andy’s is great. Second, I mention a flyover video which I was trying to overlay while we were talking. Unfortunately it seems that google “intelligently” switches the video source to wherever the audio is coming from and it switched away from the flyover. So I posted the flyover below the interview here. Enjoy.
What an honor it was last week to spend a few minutes interviewing Mr. Fitness, golf legend Gary Player. Interviewing the Black Knight is certainly one of the best highlights in the history of this modest golf blog.
In the interview below I discuss fitness with the 9-time major champion and member of the “Big Three,” the other two of course being Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.
I did not sleep last night because I was so excited for this morning. I’m happy to report that I interviewed The Black Knight, Mr. Fitness, The International Ambassador of Golf, 9-time major champion Gary Player. What a thrill!
Mr. Player is on site this week in La Quinta, California at the PGA Tour’s Humana Challenge, the “Healthiest Event in America.” For years Player has been an advocate of fitness and now he’s joined forces with Humana to promote fitness and healthy eating even more.
Of course we discussed fitness in the interview, as that’s the focus of the event this week. I had so many other questions I would have liked to ask but those will have to wait for the next time. I’ll be getting the interview ready and posting it soon.
Thanks to Mr. Player for taking a break between his situp reps and crunches to speak with me.
