HOG world tour heading to PGA Expo in Vegas today

August 25th, 2008

I’m packin’ my gear now (camera, laptop and a couple of golf shirts). I’ll be landing in Vegas in time for din-din tonight and then hitting the sack resting for the PGA Show Fall Expo. I’ll be live blog-casting from the show and taking lots of photos of all the cool new golf products I find.

I haven’t attended this show and I’m sure it won’t be close to as big as the main PGA Show in Orlando. That being said, this will be a good chance to do some research with companies and individuals who may not make it to Orlando.

Meeting Tuesday at 3:00

HOG readers and The Golf Space members who are attending the show will be getting together at 3:00 Tuesday! We’re meeting at the “Swingreminders” booth, #962.

See you there!

2007 Masters Time Capsule

January 9th, 2008

2007 HOG Time Capsule

December 31st, 2007

Today is the last day of 2007. I’m going through the year’s posts and highlighting by month, some of the best subjects of the year.

January 2007

January 2007 saw me at my first PGA Merchandise Show and I got a ton of hits, comments and thousands of video views of my interviews. I even had people from the pga.com staff watching me kick their butts delivering info from the show. In their words, “you’re doing in minutes what would take us days to do.”

When TaylorMade introduced the new Burner and Superquad drivers, Hooked On Golf Blog had the #1 and #2 spots on Google’s search results for those keywords, even over Taylormade’s own web site!

January 2007 also saw the first decent press for Tadd Fujikawa.

February 2007

February 2007 had some miracles and some tragedies.

In the miracle department, Spiro from Bogey Lounge had is first child.

In the tragedy department, a close friend of mine had most of his family killed by a drunk driver.

Titleist introduced the new ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls
.

Tadd Fujikawa won the Hawaii Open.

Ernie Els switched to Callaway.

March 2007

I tried to drive a golf ball through a 32 inch Sony TV from point blank range.

Tiger Woods signs a ball retriever endorsement contract.

Nike admitted to selling illegal drivers.

Arjun Atwal under investigation for street racing death.

Sergio Garcia shows how classless he is by spitting into the cup at Doral and then brushing it off in a “Clintonesque” fashion in a post round interview. “I didn’t spit, I just let it go down anyway. It’s no big deal.”

April 2007

My Ping Zing putter, the best putter EVER, was stolen.

Phil Mickelson switches to swing coach Butch Harmon.

The Golf Space social networking site, celebrates its one year anniversary.

THE 2007 MASTERS:

Tiger Woods stops his full driver swing when a bird flies over him.

Tiger Woods breaks a club which would eventually cost him the Masters victory. He needed that club to reach #15 in two but didn’t make it and went in the drink.

Arnold Palmer is the ceremonial starter for the 2007 Masters. I can’t hold back the tears!

Zach Johnson wins the 2007 Masters.

Ask the PGA experts questions at PGA.com

February 22nd, 2007

There’s a cool new feature on PGA.com called “Ask the PGA experts.” Go to the PGA.com home page and scroll down to the bottom. There you’ll see the experts themselves and links to ask a question and to read the answers.

I submitted a question just to see what would happen and the experts replied! I picked a question relating to my game, specifically my fight with golfer’s elbow:

Are there specific ways to adjust your swing or technique to prevent or reduce “golfer’s elbow?”
Tony K.

Golfers elbow is caused by an early release of the wrists on the downswing or a scooping action through impact. This is usually the result of your swing path being outside to in or your body being out of position. If you put your right arm (for a right handed golfer)out in front of you and bent your right wrist backward so that the back of your right hand and wrist created an angle your would want to maintain that angle as long as you could into impact. When you lose that angle and your hand goes the opposite way you are early releasing the club early and creating stress on the elbow that causes golfers elbow. See your local PGA pro for a lesson and they will be able to help you with your early release.

– Dave Phillips, PGA Professional – Titleist Performance Institute

I actually didn’t think there was a solution to my problem, which was part of the reason I picked that question. I simply thought the stress of impact on my aging elbows was the problem. But apparently I have something to look into. I don’t think my swing path goes outside in, but I DO know that a problem I have is early release on my wrists. Fixing the early release will not only increase my power but apparently help my golfer’s elbow problem. I’m very glad to hear this information.

Head to PGA.com and ask your question!

Mickelson is more fit for 2007?

January 19th, 2007

We haven’t seen Phil Mickelson since the Ryder Cup. He went into super secret training. He worked hard in his off-season on conditioning, doing cardio and weights about 6 days a week. He’s dropped 25 pounds and thinks that being in better physical condition will help his game. He said he was fatigued and it hurt his game down the stretch in tournaments etc.. I can buy that, sort of. Well, maybe not.

Mentally Fit?

Though Phil has had times when he was a little overweight, that’s never been his problem in my opinion. Despite his body fat level he’s always had the game, the shots, the skills, the talent.

What needs to be more “fit” for Phil’s game to be at it’s best is his MENTAL side. Phil (and his caddy for that matter) need to work even more on course management and decision making. There was a period of time during the last couple of years where it looked like he’d done just that and what happened? Major victories.

Perhaps if Phil believes being more physically fit will help his game, his mental side will tag along too. Sort of a placebo effect of sorts? Whatever works. Time will tell.
