Once again, due to snow I can’t get out on the course today.  The next time I do hit the links, I plan on taking my first test drive with the new Bushnell “neo” (yes, all lower case) pocket golf GPS.

Bushnell neo golf GPS - haven't put it in play yet, but it is already in my list of top new cool golf gadgets for 2011! Click for more images...

This thing is smaller than my Canon camera, which I always carry with me in my pocket.  The rounded corners are nice when it is in the pocket.  The unit comes with a belt mount too.

The unit does NOT require a subscription or fee to use either, which is nice.

Callaway denied new trial in Acushnet/ProV1 dispute – more to come

The Callaway vs Acushnet (parent company of Titleist) patent case has been going on now for about five years.  It has been like a boxing match with each heavyweight fighter seemingly getting knocked out, only to gain consciousness at the last second and deliver a near-knockout blow of their own.

Callaway scored a big victory in 2007, forcing Acushnet to stop selling the current revision of the ProV1, though that took nearly two years to happen.  Acushnet was forced to change the golf balls at that time.  I remember those few months when my buddies were stocking up on ProV1’s, just in case the new versions weren’t as good.  Acushnet later won an appeal on that ruling, and the court game was back on.

This past time around, Acushnet won as the judge upheld a jury verdict from March 2010, determining that the four patents in dispute were invalid.  Callaway was denied a request for a new trial.  Callaway has the option to appeal, but apparently will start a new suit for alleged infringement of other patents.

Frogger HOP! Green Repair Tool

If I had the job of reinventing the wheel, there’s one guy on this planet I’d hire to do the gig. That would be Jeremiah from Frogger Golf.  Jeremiah seems to know what it takes to make an every day product better, and has the guts to go and and make the darn thing.  After all, Frogger didn’t invent the club brush, but their BrushPro is the best. They didn’t invent the golf towel, but their Amphibian Towel is the best

Frogger HOP! Green Repair Tool

So why not reinvent the most used gadget in golf, or at least what should be the most used, the green repair tool?

2nd Bridgestone ball fitting – Educational and humbling experience

This past Saturday I did my 2nd Bridgestone Golf ball fitting.  My first was last fall up at a course in the mountains.  It was VERY cold and windy during that first fitting, but the net result with my Ping driver at the time was that the best ball for me was the B330-RXS.

Fast forward half a year or more and I have a new driver in the bag, Nike Machspeed Black.  I also have a new swing, following the new back diagnosis and the still healing separated shoulder.  That new swing turns out to be a granny version, 95mph.

Sorry man, but you have a granny swing...

I’ve managed to build a good friendship with my local Bridgestone rep, Matt.  Good guy.  He was there, along with the fitters who travel around this region.

We tried several balls this time, spent a little more time.  I managed to get my swing up to 98 once, but I was averaging 95.

I tried a couple of “tour” balls, which were way too hard.  My distance was considerably shorter and my side spin higher.  Less accurate and shorter is not what I’m looking for.

The two balls which were the best statistically for me were the Srixon Z-Star and the Bridgestone B330-RX.  Both of those balls I’ve played quite a bit over the last year and I do really like them both.  Obviously since it was a Bridgestone fitting, they were higher on the RX for me, which is to be expected.  That being said, it was cool that they were high on the Z-Star for my game as well.

And now, the humbling

After my session, the local course staff had brought in a very interesting player.  This player, who will remain unnamed, is one of the top amateurs in the state.  Nearly won the state champ last year.  This guy is a total nut.  Very heavy on the party end of things but somehow is a “natural” on the golf course.

Pukka’s reputation is very high. A few days ago I was telling the buyer at a local golf course about the new hats coming up. This guy started raving about Pukka and told me they were the best in the business. A totally unsolicited rave review.

Pukka has been a great company to work with from start to finish. The design process was very thorough and efficient, with great service and help on getting things to look their best.

How do you get one?

The first few dozen hats will be for giveaways.  I first intend to get these on the craniums of those who have been HOG/TGS pals, members, users, friends etc.  I’ll use the rest of this batch for site contests, giveaways, fantasy golf and any other reason I can to get ’em out in public.
