Omen Hollow Golf Ball

OnCore’s Omen Golf Ball – click to zoom

My first post for 2011 Golf Ball Week is my review of the OnCore Golf Omen, a hollow metal core golf ball.

Omen Design

This is the only golf ball in the world with a hollow metal core.  I’d call it a four piece ball, if you count air as a piece.  There are three layers, plus the hollow metallic core.  The kind of metal in the core isn’t really known other than being called a “proprietary metal” in one OnCore product description, and “steel core” in another.  The high strength metal layer gives the ball its structure and helps with a high moment of inertia (MOI).  Since all of the ball’s mass is outside the air gap, it is essentially a perimeter weighted ball!

The 2nd layer, which sits on top of the metal layer is a black polymer which helps to transfer energy from the impacting club to the metal core.  The better the energy is transferred, the more it is translated to the core.  The more energy translated to the core, the farther the ball goes.

GOLF BALL WEEK BEGINS!

Today marks the beginning of the 2011 rendition of “HOG Golf Ball Week!”  Yes it isn’t as glamorous or exciting as Shark Week, but here we go.  This week I’m going to do some reviews every day on golf balls.

I have 5-7 different golf balls that I’m going to feature this week so stay tuned.  The first piece is coming up right after this post!

New Video: Prazza Golf Ball Finder – You MUST see this!

Prazza golf ball finderI’ve reviewed about 4,578,093 golf gadgets and I must say, not many can top this one.  The Prazza golf ball radar unit is a system which comes with golf balls equipped with transmitters inside, which can be located by a hand held device which give the golfer visual and vibration feedback which enables the player to find his ball, ANYWHERE.  It will even find a ball in water.

I’ll be doing a more detailed review of the Prazza golf ball finder soon, but had to share this video as soon as I had it posted to the HOG/TGS YouTube channel:

There’s no doubt that Bridgestone Golf is blowing up (in a good way).  Their golf balls are well known for being some of the very best on the market, but how about their clubs?  Better call in the bomb squad.

J40 Dual Pocket Cavity Irons

Okay first things first.  I’m going to mention the name “Bridgestone J40 Dual Pocket Cavity Irons” many times.  So from this point on I’m going to Greg Normanize them to the abbreviation “J40DPC.”

The J40 is the newest version of the J38 Dual Pocket Cavity Irons that most recently Fred Couples won two events with on the Champions Tour.  These are premium forged irons with a mid sized head and traditional look when standing over them. (more…)

Innovex Golf V-Motion Golf Ball

Though not a full fledged product review, I’d like to mention quickly about my test round today with the Innovex V-Motion Tour golf ball.  This is a tour level quality ball which retails for under $24/dozen.  Yes, tour level quality for under $24.

I shot a satisfying 75 at the tough local course at the airport here in Salt Lake, Wingpointe Golf Course.  The V-Motion was under total control, felt nice and soft even in the bitter morning cold, spun perfectly and flew straight at the pin.  I carded 4 birdies in the round and happily managed to play with one V-Motion the whole time without losing it.

At the end of 18 holes, I was very impressed with the durability of the ball.  Hardly any noticeable wear.

So for now, my first impressions of the Innovex V-Motion Tour is that it is a great ball, certainly the best ball on the planet for under $24/dozen.  Full review posted soon.
