My Dad and I win the Father’s Day tournament

I’m happy to announce a victory for me and my Dad in this year’s father/son tournament at his great club.  We struggled all day and missed many putts by just inches.  My swing was mess and I missed many iron shots badly.   We didn’t know it but we were tied for the lead going into the final hole, despite our feelings that we weren’t playing up to our ability level.

Our last hole was a par-5 which we almost reached in two.  My Dad chipped from about 10 yards off the green.  The ball checked perfectly, then released like a putt.  It took the right-to-left break perfectly and softly fell into the cup for EAGLE.  I ran up and high-fived my Dad.  It was the highlight of our day.  We ended up winning the thing by two shots.  That eagle made the difference!

This marked one of many father/son tourneys my Dad and I have either won or placed in.  We weren’t expecting to win based on how bad we felt about our individual games but we ham and egged it well.  These tournaments are very enjoyable for me.

Graeme McDowell is the 2010 US OPEN champ

A few thoughts before I hit the hay from a long weekend of golf, Father’s Day and the US OPEN.

Nobody seemed to want to win this thing.  Everyone melted down. It seemed that the person who wanted to lose this thing the least won.

Gregory Havret was impressive and didn’t melt like I thought.  He logged a solid 2nd place finish and could have sent the thing into a playoff if he could have birdied the final hole rather than parring it.

Graeme Mcdowell didn’t gag either.  At least he gagged less than the rest of the field.  Keeping his lunch down better than everyone else got him a US OPEN win.

Best Father’s Day wishes to my Dad, who has been all one could ask for in that department.

Thanks

I’d like to thank my Dad for being a great role model.  My role model wasn’t ever Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods or some pro athlete. It was and continues to be my Dad.

Thanks for introducing me to skiing, Alta, the Utah Utes, Greek traditions, Southern Utah, Arches National Park, corny jokes, hard work, Dick’s Cafe, writing, being classy, being generous, doing things right, having bushy eyebrows, photography, ghost towns, corny jokes, providing me a good home when I grew up, showing me what being a great host is, being my catcher-coaching me in little league baseball.

I’d especially like to thank my Dad for these these things which have had a huge impact on my life:

Marrying my great Mother (her memory is eternal).

Recognizing that I had a passion for drums and paying for my music lessons for so many years.  That started me on an absolutely fantastic life path.  I had so many unique and amazing experiences as a professional musician and have made so many great friends as a result, including my lovely wife.  None of what I have right now would be here without that seed you planted.

Last but not least, thanks introducing me to GOLF.  Though there are times I wish you’d never put a putter in my hands I’m thankful for that first set of Browning Automatic blades.  I think there are times when my golf opponents wish I’d never put a putter in my hands either.  That is because you and I used to have putting contests in the den when I was a little kid.

And Dad, thanks for the 100’s of rounds of golf and the subsequent quality time we’ve spent together.  The last round we played was a true test of patience, capped off with you chipping in for eagle to WIN the tournament for us!

US OPEN after three rounds

Phil Mickelson lost two shots to par today, and lost considerable ground. He and Ernie Els sit seven shots from Dustin Johnson’s lead of -6. Tiger Woods fired a 66 to put himself in the 3rd spot on the leaderboard, five shots back. In solo second is Graeme McDowell, three shots back.

Thoughts

Tiger Woods is five back. Does he have enough game right now to make up the lead? Typically leaders don’t run away and hide on Sunday at a US OPEN.

Graeme McDowell is three back and will be playing in the final group. I don’t expect him to win, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him shoot a round in the high 70’s under the pressure of the situation.

Phil Micelson and Ernie Els have a remote chance if they go low and Dustin Johnson gags.

Mike Weir had a ton of media coverage on Thursday after shooting a round of 71.  Since then he’s followed it up with rounds of 79 and 83.

Tom Watson must have found the golf fountain of youth.  He’s T16 going into Sunday.  Very cool.

Dustin Johnson

Leader Dustin Johnson knows how to do one thing: win at Pebble Beach.  He’s leading the field in driving distance at over 325 and also in greens in regulation.  The difference is that this is a major championship.  Typically players who haven’t been in this position before melt down.  Will DJ melt and gain “experience” for next time or can he hold on to his three shot lead?  Tomorrow will be interesting.

Unfair holes?

Every US OPEN there is whining about holes being unfair.  Puhlease…  the test is the same for all players.
