Too Many 59’s?

Written by: Tony Korologos | Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Prior to 2010, a total of THREE 59’s had been shot on the PGA Tour, ever:

Al Geiberger: 1977 Memphis Classic
David Duval: 1999 Bob Hope
Chip Beck: 1991 Las Vegas Invitational

Today the 2nd 59 of this season was recorded in grand fashion, as Stuart Appleby surged for a victory at the Old White course and the new tour event, the Greenbriar Classic.  The first 59 of this season was by Paul Goydos at the John Deere.

Is this just random happenstance, or do they need to set up the courses a little tougher for these pros?  The gear has been limited now for a couple of years, ball technology and driver CC’s limited..

Stuart Appleby breaks four year drought with a win at Old White. Oh, and he shot a 59. Yawn.

I’m very happy for Stuart Appleby and his amazing final round 59 at the Old White course, Greenbriar Classic.  Look at this series of scores: 66, 68, 65, 59.  That is super sub par.  Perhaps next year they’ll have to set up Old White a little tougher?

Good to see Apples in the win column again

I was getting used to Appleby starting out the year with a victory in week #1 in Hawaii, and having not done that for a few years must have thrown his body clock off or something.  The victory couldn’t happen to a cooler cat.  Stuart is liked across the board.

Can I lay a bet down in Vegas now on Appleby winning in week #1 of the 2011 PGA Tour season?

Hilton Head Golf Suggestions?

I’ve heard a lot about Palmetto Dunes but never played it.  I may have an opportunity to head down to South Carolina soon to experience some Hilton Head golf. It will be a tough adjustment going from 4300 feet and dry air to sea level and high humidity.

They’ve got three courses at Palmetto, a Fazio (George, Tom’s uncle), a Robert Trent Jones and an Arthur Hills.  The course pictured is the Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto.

Of course there’s always Harbor Town.  It is cool to test your skills at a course where the PGA Tour regularly plays.

Any suggestions?

My new pal

I had just make a great birdie on #3 at Wingpointe (by the Salt Lake Airport).  That hole is a tough par-3 over water, usually into a head wind.  I’d stuck my B330-RXS to about three feet and drained the putt with a putter I’d accidentally left in my bag from equipment testing yesterday.   After making that putt I may have a new putter but I definitely have a new pal.

Walking off the green I nearly stepped on this guy.  I picked him up to put him in a safer place but had to snap a pic first because he was so cool.
