Greetings from the small town of Española, New Mexico. I’m staying in the Santa Claran Hotel, just a few minutes from Black Mesa Golf Club.
Today was mostly a travel day, but I managed to squeeze 18 holes in on one of my favorite courses in the world. I made a new friend, John Ehle, a writer from Wisconsin. We blazed through the course and had a fantastic time. It is very fun to take someone around the course who has not seen it before. I sort of rediscover each hole myself.
I was happy with how I played the course today. After getting up at 4 a.m. and flying to Albuquerque, then driving nearly 100 miles to the course I can’t complain. The start was shaky, bogey-double. I sucked it up and made 11 straight pars from hole #5 to hole #16. Played my best ever on the par-3′s, even par. Hole #8 is a BUGGER, playing at 239 yards. Solid 3-wood to 10 feet.
