Mo-Money leads after three rounds

Surprisingly Rory Sabbatini followed up the amazing low round of 64 on Friday with another great round Saturday, a 66.  Most players don’t follow up super low rounds with another one.  With all the other players struggling in the wind, “Mo Money” (remember the Tiger Woods’ garage commercial and Tiger’s head cover “Frank?”) Sabbatini has build up a huge five stroke lead at -9.  The nearest competitors to Rory are Gary Woodland, Y.E. Yang and Jerry Kelley.  The tournament is Mo-Money’s to win.

Much talk has been made of Sabbatini’s TaylorMade Ghost Putter which he has been putting lights out with.  For all you gear heads, the photo is to the right.  Click it to see a bigger version.

Sabbatini has been sporting a Greg Norman style hat for a while.  Many think it is a fashion statement, but the truth is that he had some skin cancer removed from his face and he needs to protect his face better.

Speaking of Jerry Kelley

Jerry Kelly had a very strange incident on the par-4 6th hole.  His tee shot ended up in a palm tree, about 15-20 feet up in the air.  There were two balls in the palm tree.  In order for Kelly to be able to take an unplayable lie penalty drop, he had to positively identify the ball.  That meant possibly climbing the tree.  Instead, a photographer with a huge zoom lens zoomed in and shot a picture of the ball.  They looked at the photo on the camera’s LCD screen and Kelly was able to get the ruling.  Had that not happened, he would have had to hit his 3rd shot from the tee again, because it would have been deemed a lost ball.  Kelly ended up making a great bogey on that hole, en route to a 68.

Y.E. Yang

Yang is no yoke.  He’s really having a great year.  He had a funny comment on his tee time Sunday, which is later in the day as he is higher up on the leaderboard than he has been used to:

“Latest tee time (1pm) for 3rd round in a while. Goes to show how much I sucked these past months.”

How do you not like Yang?  He’s solid, and apparently has quite a cool sense of humor.  And please tell me if you can think of someone on tour who is a better hybrid player?  I can’t think of one.

Kyle Stanley

I made my waiver move in fantasy golf yesterday, and put rookie Kyle Stanley on my team because he was lurking around the top of the leaderboard.  Kyle, I apologize.  I realize I’m the reason you shot 74 yesterday and took yourself out of contention.

Lee Westwood

Looks like Lee Westwood won’t be regaining the #1 world ranking this week.  Westwood faded Saturday with a 75, dropping him to a tie for 26th place, 13 shots behind Sabbatini.
