2010 putter week continues with putter review number three…

I’ve mentioned my bad back many times here, and have reviewed some items which help golfers deal with bad backs or help prevent back injuries.  The “Double Duty” Divot Repair Putter may seem a bit silly to a serious golfer who doesn’t have back issues, but to an older player or someone who can’t bend over well and wants to enjoy golf, there’s an option for fixing ball marks which helps prevent back issues.

Construction

The Double Duty is a center shafted putter with a 36″ shaft.  The back of the 360 gram stainless steel head has a divot repair tool.  I thought that was one of the nuttiest things I’d ever seen in golf until I thought about it through the eyes of the older, fatter calorically challenged or back issue ridden golfer.

Looks

This isn’t the best looking putter I’ve stood over.  But the white guide like behind the sweet spot is extended by the divot tool, so there’s a good target line alignment visual

On The Course

I usually play 34″ shafts choked down, so it was a bit strange for me to putt this 36″ model without choking down 3-4 inches.  But when I did choke down and make some putts with the thing, it was surprisingly smooth.  As strictly a putter, it isn’t bad at all.

Everyone should repair ball marks.  I try to fix five ball marks on every green.  Fixing ball marks with this putter isn’t the easiest thing in the world because of the angle you have to achieve with the back of the putter.  But doing that versus bending over is a big difference.

Conclusion

This putter is not for everyone.  I doubt we’ll see any PGA Tour pros playing the Double Duty Putter any time soon.  But for those who want to do their part and fix ball marks but have issues bending over, this could be the ticket.

The first thing i thought of when i saw this was how great it would be for an old man with back problems. ALong with the ball retriever on the top an old man would never have to bend over with this putter.
