I played a few holes today at TPC Sawgrass with the yet to be released Titleist ProV1. Yes it helps to have connections in high places, and I joked about selling these balls for $50 each on ebay. I may need to, to recover the dough it cost me to play the TPC! To save yourself $100, just fish the two I lost out of the water at the TPC. One is on #1 and the other on #17. In fact I’m going to make a claim right now:
“I, Tony Korologos, hold the honor and distinction of being first player to ever hit a 2009 model ProV1 into the water on the 17th at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium course.”
How sad is it, that the first damn shot I hit with the new ProV1 went in a lake? Geez.
The new ProV1’s can be identified by the little dots between the lines and the arrows, which you can see in the image here.
I haven’t had the opportunity to spend enough time in conditions which will give me the best idea of the performance of this ball. That being said, the ball feels nice and solid. The ball feels good off the driver and when I managed to hit crisp irons and wedges (a very small percentage of the time today), the ball performed well.
The cover of the new ProV1 feels entirely different. The old covers were not very durable. After roughly 12 holes with this one pictured, two areas had some signs of minor groove damage. One was from my Vokey 60 and the other from my 9-iron. No shreds though and the ball remained very playable. The ball seemed to putt well too.
Once again though, my game showed the rust and the stiff back I had today on this very “big boy” course. When the weather is better and my game is right, I’ll do a more detailed review of the new Titleist ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls.
Man what a great day today. First I was enjoying some of the best golf company you could want. I was playing with my good friend Eddie Peck, who’s course Black Mesa is probably the best course I’ve ever played. Eddie’s head pro Tom Velarde and his assistant Heath Wade rounded out our foursome.
It had been raining all night and rained the whole 2.5 hours it took us to get to Ponte Vedra Beach. When we got there the rain stopped but it was bone-chillingly cold. This is from a guy who wears shorts playing golf in shorts in Utah’s snow.
I’m short on time so I’m shortening this a bit. I struggled on the front because I was cold, tired (3 hours sleep), and very jacked up to play the TPC. I shot a high number for me on the front and missed EVERY fairway as my driver was apparently still in the mountain time zone.
On the back I made some adjustments and the temps crept up to where I could get my back loose. I started hitting some good drives and also some good approaches. I birdied #14 for the highlight hole.
I missed a dumb little three foot par put on #16, where Davis Love III hit the incredible shot off the pine straw en route to winning The Players Championship.
17 & 18
On the famous 17th, I suddenly felt like I’d just chugged a bunch of ipecac. My gag reflex forced me to yank one left of the island green. Water. Then right of the island green. Water… I dumped three balls into the lake and almost went over the green with my 4th. Nice little nine on that hole.
I got it together and hit a great tee shot on 18, which has a very intimidating look with all that water left. I then proceeded to yank my approach into the water and carded a double.
Though I limped home I was very happy to be able to cross TPC Sawgrass of my list of must play courses. I’ll post a review soon.
TPC Sawgrass Photos
Naturally I have a bunch of pictures of the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in my gallery. I shot 108 pictures today.
My schedule here at the PGA Show has changed a bit, thanks to may pals from Black Mesa inviting me to fill in the 4th spot in their tee time at TPC Sawgrass tomorrow.
I definitely don’t have enough balls, in my golf bag.
In this video the very cool Mr. Duffy Waldorf gives me the low down on his wife’s golf hat company, Gogie Girl. After the Gogie info, Duffy tells us about his game and gives me some advice on playing TPC Sawgrass!

I have started dumping photos into the 2009 PGA Show Gallery. Here’s a shot of the new Titleist 909 D3 driver. Many more to come but for now I’m back to the floor.
I’m here in Orlando in the press room at the PGA Show. I got in late last night.
To my horror, I discovered that all of my contacts and appointments for the show hadn’t synced to my laptop. So I have no idea where, who, when, what or how. I remember a few of my appointments and the rough times, but if any of you are wondering if I blew you off, email me and I’ll get to you asap.
Also, something in the air system of my luxurious room apparently doesn’t agree with my eyes. My eyes are so bloodshot I look like I’ve been partying in Vegas for a week. Speaking of the room, the discount rate I got over the phone seems to have disappeared and they’re trying to bill me 2x what I was quoted. I’ll deal with that later.
I’m resetting, having a coffee and getting ready to hit the floor…
