Golfinator Four: Judgement Swing
I have a friend named Brian who I’ve played dozens of rounds of golf with. A couple of weeks ago I ran into Brian in the pro shop and saw a bizarre contraption on his arm. No it wasn’t the next version of the swing jacket. No he wasn’t auditioning for Terminator 4. It was a medical device.
What happened?
Brian is a sculptor. He was sculpting a very large project, about a 10 foot tall block of marble. While cutting the marble, the motorized rock cutter slipped and went right into his forearm. The blade cut right through all of his muscle and tendons/ligaments to about half way through the bone. His fingers immediately curled under because the ligaments on the underside didn’t have any resistance.
Brian nearly bled to death.

Man what an interesting week in the world of professional golf. Tiger is out and I’m sure the networks and golf publications are gasping for oxygen.
Too young? Nope!
Inbee Park won the Women’s U.S. Open at the age of 20, the youngest Open winner ever.
Too old? Nope!
Some other PGA Tour players may want to remind Kenny Perry how old he is (47). He isn’t supposed to be beating all the flat bellies out there but he and his super slow swing just won the Buick Open.

Nothing is worse than wet golf grips. I usually use Winn W5 grips. If my grips get wet they turn slimy and slippery. The “ClubZup” is a device you keep handy to keep your grips from touching the wet ground.
The ClubZup is very simple. It attaches to the end of your golf club and you stick the forks of the unit into the ground, standing your club up vertically. This keeps your entire club from touching the ground and from getting wet. It also helps if you have a bad back, since you don’t have to bend over to pick up your club.

Hard work really does pay off
Hats off to my very good friend Jay Flemma. He’s about the hardest working golf writer I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen dozens first hand at the many events I’ve attended. Jay’s hard work has paid off with a gig as travel writer for The Golf Channel. There’s nobody better for this gig because Jay’s knowledge of golf courses, course design, golf course architecture and golf travel are unmatched.

I have a new friend named Delinda who I met at the Team Challenge a couple of weeks ago. Delinda has a unique web site and angle on athletes, including golfers. Delinda writes about the more “celebrity” aspect of athletes, focusing on the good work they can do with their popularity and checkbooks. If there are athletes doing good deeds for charities and other noble causes, Delinda’s web site Athlebrities.com is the place to get the scoop. It’s also the place for you ladies (or heterosexually challenged men I suppose) to get the latest on male “golf hotties” like Camilo Villegas.
Delinda: “While my site started as a platform to objectify the hotties, it seems that its taken on a life of its own and demanded that I pay closer attention to the ‘good guys’. As I continued my research into hot male athletes, I discovered that aside from just looking sexy, some of these guys are out there donating their time, money and efforts to make this world just a little bit better.”
It was a “unique” experience hanging out at the swimming pool in my speedo with Delinda, while she was telling me how hot Camilo was….

Man did I have a smokin’ round today. I mean, I was damn near on fire. I was kicking the rear end of my pal, the head pro and director of golf. On #16 approach I saw some smoke coming from #17. If you recall this post, TWO golf carts plunged into the river on #17 and were pulled out by tractors yesterday.
My friend and golf pro had to leave me hanging and save his course and his bacon. He had to go deal with the fire which was left of #17 fairway. We could see the flames clear from 16 fairway, a good 350 yards away. It was lucky my buddy left. I knocked my approach to three feet and drained my birdie putt!

“Can you fire engines please hold it down? We’re teeing off!”
There’s no way a fire in that area started by itself. There must have been some kids playing with matches in there.

Tiger Woods had his bad knee reconstructed here in my neck of the woods (sorry for the pun) again. This time Tiger’s ACL was repaired. My offer of some beers, popcorn and a few video games to Tiger still stands if he’s recovering in Deer Valley as I suspect.
Tiger’s doctor: “There were no surprises during the procedure, and as we have said, with the proper rehabilitation and training, it is highly unlikely that Mr. Woods will have any long-term effects as it relates to his career.”
Tiger: “It was important to me to have the surgery as soon as possible so that I could begin the rehabilitation process… I look forward to working hard at my rehabilitation over the coming months and returning to the PGA Tour healthy next year.”
Healthy?
Apparently Tiger has had some real problems since just after the British Open which is when he tore his ACL jogging.
Boy what message does that send to the other PGA Tour players? This guy is beating up on them and winning U.S. Opens with a torn ACL and multiple fractures in his leg. Damn… What if he was healthy???

I’m very sad today. My all time favorite comedian George Carlin died today at age 71. No comedian has come close to making me laugh as much as Carlin. George’s highly intelligent humor and direct way of pointing out how stupid people can be was unrivaled.
Is George up there floating in the clouds?
One of my favorite Carlin routines was his bit on heaven and God, and how if you believe that tale, the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus aren’t far behind. Now that he’s passed from this world, George may now be finding out whether his assessment of God and heaven was right. Is George up there floating in the clouds now?
I’ll be watching a few of my George Carlin DVDs tonight and having glass of wine in his honor. Here’s to you George.
