Fred Couples shot a 65 yesterday and leads Arnold Palmer’s tournament at Bay Hill. I always root for Freddy because I share a few things with him, namely his great looks and his buttery smooth golf swing. Well, OK I don’t share those with him. I just share the misery of having to cut those “monthly checks” and mostly having a bad back.
Tiger complained about the greens and shot an even par 70. Two bogies, two birdies. There was a bit of a bantering session in the media between Tiger and Arnold about the greens. Arnold said that though the greens may not look good due to a disease, they’re rolling well after being cut and rolled every morning. He implied that Tiger’s problems on the greens were “in his head.” I think there are only 3-4 people in the world qualified to say if Tiger is psyched out about something and The King would be one of them.
Can Freddie keep it up? I hope so. But his 48 year old bad back might have something different to say about that over the next three rounds.

Amazing how good Freddy scores when he putts as well as even the middle of the pack tour pros putt. No matter what, it must have been a real confidence booster for him shooting a low round for the day. At 48; he still drives it further than most on tour - and his iron play is jsut incredible. Always struggles with the putter thought. I think on this day he went cross handed on the short putts but conventional on the lag putts..
He can still really play - I’m looking forward to seeing how he does at Augusta
