NBC’s Jimmy Roberts butchers post round interview with Sean O’Hair

I’m watching my anchor player in fantasy golf, Stewart Cink, melt down today. Then I almost fell out of my chair listening to the post round interviews. I’ve had no opinion at all on the quality of NBC’s Jimmy Roberts work as a golf announcer to this point, but today might have tipped the scales in the “WTF?” direction…

Sean O’Hair just won his 2nd PGA tournament. Most golf fans know, and certainly anyone with half a brain in the press knows the history Sean O’Hair had with his father Marc O’Hair. Remember? His father was the one who made him sign an insane contract and worked him like he was a slave and like he owned him. His father was the one who said “I would like to tell all my dear friends in the media to kiss my ass.”

O’Hair has not spoken to his father for quite a long time, roughly 2005 is my guess.

So in the post round interview after today’s win, NBC’s Jimmy Roberts must not have been listening, or wanted to hear a different reply to his question to Sean O’Hair about this win:

O’HAIR: “I gotta thank my caddy Paul Tesori and my coach Steve Dahlby, and most of all I want to thank my father-in-law. You know he was there last week (tears in his eyes) and gave me a good pep talk.”

ROBERTS: “Really? I think a lot of people who don’t know a lot about golf might be surprised to hear that. But things are OK with you and him now?”

O’HAIR: “NO my father-IN-LAW Steve Lucas. My father-in-law used to be on the bag…”

DOH! I think Jimmy Roberts was expecting to get the biggest golf story scoop of the year during this interview because he obviously wasn’t listening or he didn’t have his information right. It’s funny and ironic that Roberts actually said “I think a lot of people who don’t know a lot about golf…”

Then Roberts comes up with one of the most profound post round interview statements I’ve ever heard:

“There are wins and then there are wins.”

Wow.. Deep.

Unbelievable. Roberts is an idiot. NBC has the worst golf coverage of all the networks. How many minutes into the telecast did it take Miller to mention Tiger? Now all the networks kiss Tiger’s ass, but none as bad as NBC.

“There are idiots and then there are idiots.”

I had to repost your comment for some reason. It didn’t appear. I’m wondering what is up with that…

I didn’t notice that much of a Tiger Fest with NBC this weekend. Naturally they tried to plug the Arnold Palmer tournament to get the ratings up but I think Johnny Miller tries to do a good job of not sucking up too much. He criticized O’Hair’s slow play but also said he’s a star in the making.

I did catch the Roberts goof and thought “oh, poor Sean - to have to deal with incompetent reporters.” It would be bad enough to bring up his dad anyway, but Roberts mistook the father-in-law for the dad and that’s got to be a bit of a painful thing.

One thing about it, this year’s Olympics coverage should be good for a few laughs if Roberts is as prepared for that as he was for this weekend’s golf coverage.
