Both sporting events in Phoenix were entertaining

FBR Open

The FBR Open proved to be quite entertaining. Phil Mickelson closed in from four shots back to catch JB Holmes and force a playoff. Holmes birdied 18 in regulation after carrying his drive 350 yards. He then birdied the hole again on the first playoff hole to beat Phil.

If they played every PGA Tour event at the TPC of Scottsdale, JB Holmes would be the #1 player in the world.

Phil Mickelson Super Bowl Tickets

During the course of his round, Phil Mickelson gave a pair of Super Bowl tickets to a father and son in the gallery. That is pretty damn cool. I need someone that cool to give me some Masters tickets…

Super Bowl

Speaking of the Super Bowl, I enjoyed the game this year. I used to be a dedicated NFL fan. I wrote a program which tracked all the teams scores and stats, point spreads etc. I used that to track play and make bets on the games. I ended up way ahead in the long run… I lost interest in the NFL as my interest in golf increased, and because the players move around so much I never know what team they’re playing on.

I didn’t care which team won the Super Bowl, but it would have been quite historic for New England to win and go 19-0. That would be akin to Tiger Woods winning the grand slam this season…

Phoenix was the center of the universe for a weekend. Not only did we have a great golf out at the TPC but the week leading up was full of NFL activities galore. Although I was thrilled with the outcome of the Superbowl, I was able to play in the GridIron Greats Golf tournament. With players like Dick Butkus, his son, Jack Youngblood, Mike Ditka and many more, I coldn’t think of anything more enjoyable than playing my favorite game with some legends of football.
