2007 HOG Time Capsule

December 31st, 2007

Today is the last day of 2007. I’m going through the year’s posts and highlighting by month, some of the best subjects of the year.

January 2007

January 2007 saw me at my first PGA Merchandise Show and I got a ton of hits, comments and thousands of video views of my interviews. I even had people from the pga.com staff watching me kick their butts delivering info from the show. In their words, “you’re doing in minutes what would take us days to do.”

When TaylorMade introduced the new Burner and Superquad drivers, Hooked On Golf Blog had the #1 and #2 spots on Google’s search results for those keywords, even over Taylormade’s own web site!

January 2007 also saw the first decent press for Tadd Fujikawa.

February 2007

February 2007 had some miracles and some tragedies.

In the miracle department, Spiro from Bogey Lounge had is first child.

In the tragedy department, a close friend of mine had most of his family killed by a drunk driver.

Titleist introduced the new ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls
.

Tadd Fujikawa won the Hawaii Open.

Ernie Els switched to Callaway.

March 2007

I tried to drive a golf ball through a 32 inch Sony TV from point blank range.

Tiger Woods signs a ball retriever endorsement contract.

Nike admitted to selling illegal drivers.

Arjun Atwal under investigation for street racing death.

Sergio Garcia shows how classless he is by spitting into the cup at Doral and then brushing it off in a “Clintonesque” fashion in a post round interview. “I didn’t spit, I just let it go down anyway. It’s no big deal.”

April 2007

My Ping Zing putter, the best putter EVER, was stolen.

Phil Mickelson switches to swing coach Butch Harmon.

The Golf Space social networking site, celebrates its one year anniversary.

THE 2007 MASTERS:

Tiger Woods stops his full driver swing when a bird flies over him.

Tiger Woods breaks a club which would eventually cost him the Masters victory. He needed that club to reach #15 in two but didn’t make it and went in the drink.

Arnold Palmer is the ceremonial starter for the 2007 Masters. I can’t hold back the tears!

Zach Johnson wins the 2007 Masters.

I crash the 2nd Annual Christmas Classic

December 26th, 2007

Alternate title: Being in the right place at the right time and having a video camera in my pocket.

I live across the street from my home course, River Oaks. It sucks in the Winter to look out my window and see the course covered in snow and unplayable.

Yesterday, Christmas day 2007, I’m driving by the course and I see some people on #18 tee. I keep an eye on the course to prevent vandalism or trespassers so I stopped to see what they were doing. As it turns out, two pals I’ve golfed with a bunch of times were out there playing in the “2nd Annual Christmas Classic.” Brad & Randy (Brandy) get together every year to hit the “12 balls of Christmas” and see who gets the closest shot and bragging rights for a year.

I was lucky to be driving by at just the right time with my usual camera in my pocket. I crashed the party and hit the first ever golf shot I’ve hit on Christmas. I chunked the shot, but it was fun to swing a club after about a month off.

Below is the video of the 2nd Annual Christmas Classic:

Politically correct holiday greetings

December 23rd, 2007

I just had a discussion with someone in a grocery store who was giving me grief for saying “Merry Christmas ” and not “happy holidays.” This is due to the possibility of my “offending” someone who’s religious, political or whatever other beliefs may be different than mine.

Last night I thanked my friend for inviting me to his Christmas party and I was quickly corrected. It was a “Winter Solstice” party, not a Christmas party. OK fine.

The politically correct thing has to go. Until then I hope I covered all the December holidays below:

Happy Holidays
Merry Christmas
Happy Hanuakkah
Happy Kwanzaa
Enjoy Winter Solstice
Happy Handwashing Awareness Month
Happy Hi Neighbor Month
Merry National Stress Free Family Holiday Month
Enjoy Read A New Book Month
Have a Safe Toy and Gift Month
Merry Universal Human Rights Month
Happy Write to a Friend Month

Wie to focus on women’s tournaments? Wow what a concept

December 21st, 2007

michelle wie masters Tiger WoodsAnd there was much rejoicing…

Thankfully, Michelle Wie will not be given the opportunity to humiliate herself in the PGA Tour’s Sony Open this year. No sponsors’ exemptions.

Wie has also apparently said that she plans to focus on women’s tournaments this year. Gee what a brilliant idea. I wonder what rocket scientist thought of that…

Straight Nuts Golf Hold ‘Em

December 19th, 2007

My pals and I never saw a bet we didn’t like on the golf course.

Straight Nuts, at www.pokergolfscorecards.com, has five different games you can buy for adding a little extra fun to your rounds of golf with your buddies. Their games are basically printed cards with blackjack or a variation of poker made for golf.

Golf Hold ‘Em

I’ve now played a few rounds of Straight Nuts Golf Hold ‘Em. In this game you pick a target score for every hole. Depending on the level of players in your group, you may wish to pick a gross or handicapped (net) score as your target. If you reach the target score or better, you scratch off your card and it becomes part of your poker hand. You play your best five cards on the front, back and whole 18 against your pals. In my group there are a total of $3.00 to win or lose (front-back-18).

In the picture below you can see one of my rounds. My target score was pars on all holes but the par-5’s, where birdie was the target. I did set the target score on the toughest par-4 as a bogey on #13 (I made bogey).

Conclusion

Golf Hold ‘Em is fun and adds a little different flavor to your rounds. There’s extra incentive to reach a target score on each hole, a chance for you to focus even more. If you play well, you have a better shot at a good poker hand and collecting some cash and bragging rights.

I look forward to checking out all of Straight Nuts’ products.
