How I test the balance of mallet putters

I made a little YouTube video showing how I like to check the weight balance of mallet putters. I happen to be testing the RedEye i330 Laser Putter in this video (review on that club coming soon).

If the putter face is parallel to the ground when I balance the club on my finger the weighting feels right. Some mallets are way off and those particular ones don’t seem to want to travel on the target line for me.

The ones that are “way off” are not face-balanced putters. It’s that simple: they’re toe-hang putters. Depending on how you putt, either can be “right.”

  2. Right Eric, which is exactly why I used the words “for me”… I find toe hang putters don’t want to stay square and want to open during the swing “for me”…

It’s Erik, and in the video there is no “for me.” In fact, you specifically say “…then YOU know that the weighting is right on a mallet putter.” You don’t say “… then _I_ know that the weighting is right for me.”

Instead of educating readers by talking about the differences in balance/weighting, you’ve told the viewer that there’s a “right” way for “us.”

  4. “one thing I like to do….” is the first line. The description of the video on youtube says “The way I like to tell if a mallet putter is weighted right for me.”

There’s no implication that every golfer in the universe should do it my way or that my way is the only right way… Get up on the wrong side of the bed today? Jeez take a chill pill.

I didn’t wake up on the wrong side of the bed – I simply don’t like false information. I’ve read that you wrote “for me.” I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with being told face balanced is when “YOU [your reader, or “us”] know that the weighting is right on a mallet putter.”

You can reply again, but the video will still be incorrect and/or misleading. I give up.

  6. The way you seem to be “trying to help” is delivered in a rather rude way. “Misinformation”? Yup. My whole goal in life is to completely misinform the golfing public about the way I tinker with golf clubs… Give me a break…

I’m off to play golf with a blade putter that isn’t face balanced….. have a nice weekend.
