Hell Day Tournament Format

October 31st, 2006

Happy Halloween!

Hell Day Tournament Format

Here’s a fun idea for your golf league for this time of year. My league has started doing “Hell Day” for it’s final tournament of the year since it’s so close to Halloween. During Hell Day we set the course up to be extremely difficult. This year we had it so tough that 9 over par (for 9 holes) was the winner and he was 5 shots clear of anyone else.

Tee Boxes

Put the tees in crazy places like bushes, dirt roads, side hill lies, behind trees etc. On one hole this year we put the tee over 100 yards farther back than the black tees on a par 4. One person out of 60 got a par and won a skin. It was a 310 yard carry to reach the fairway.

On #12 this year we forced all players to tee off with their driver. The problem is that #12 is a 162 yard par 3 over a hazard!

On #10 we put the tee waaaay back. In the pic below you can see the tee box. It’s about 320 to the fairway from here and the fairway is only about 10 yards wide at the opening with hazard on both sides!

It’s 320 yards to a 10 yard wide fairway with hazards on both sides!

Fairway

We brought a bunch of pumpkins in for Hell Day. Some pumpkins we’ll place in the fairway and the players are required to hit the fairway pumpkin on a par 4 or par 5 before they can hit their approach shot to the green. The funny thing is that when the ball hits the pumpkin it doesn’t go very far. The ball ends up so close that the pumpkin interferes with your swing.

Another hellish thing we do on par 4’s or 5’s is make the player hit into a fairway bunker before he’s allowed to go for the green.

Greens

On Hell Day we put the pins in the worst possible place you can imagine. Some pins we’ll put on the fringe and some we’ve even put IN a greenside bunker.

This year on #14 we put the pin on a severe tier (pic below). This is a drivable par 4. I drove the green and proceeded to score an 11 as I 10-putted. I’d putt the ball up to the hole and it would roll 25 feet right back to me.

I drove this par 4 but 10-putted for an 11!

We also took some small pumpkins and put them around the hole to make players putt around them.

#15 this year we put 3 pins in the green: front, middle and back. I kept telling everyone “hey you’re pin high” but no one got the joke. A couple of years ago we put about 10 holes in a green with no flags. You just putt to the nearest hole.

Another fun thing to do is put one big hole in the green. One year we did this on a hole which had two greens. The hole was about 2 feet wide. It was funny to hear people saying “play it right edge” or “I lipped out on a that one.”

Other ideas

I’ve heard many crazy and great ideas for tournaments like this. One good idea is to have set of right and left handed rental clubs on one hole and force the player to tee off left handed (for right handed players).

That’s “Mr. President” to you

October 30th, 2006

Last week I had the final tournament of the year at one of my golf leagues. This tournament was called “Hell Day” and it was very fun. I’ll have a post about it soon.

At the banquet following the tournament I was overwhelmingly voted in as club president for a 3rd year in a row.

That’s “Mr. President” to you…

Here are a couple of pictures of Titleist 907D prototypes. Usually Titleist has a regular face and a deep face model. I’m guessing the more rounded one is the deep faced.

More info when I dig it up.

Met the local Nike rep today. He showed me the new Sumo Sasquatch SQ driver. It’s BIG.

I got a kick out of showing him the pics I have of the “top secret Nike Sumo prototypes” I posted a few days ago. I’m not so sure he thought they were that funny though…

Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Wedge Review

October 23rd, 2006

Titleist Vokey Spin Milled WedgeVokey Spin Milled 60

A couple of years ago I had a Vokey Oil Can lob wedge which I loved. After it got ripped off I replaced it with a Hogan wedge and now a Mizuno. I liked the Oil Can, but not quite enough to replace it with another one. Not the case with the Vokey Spin Milled.

Technology

The Vokey Spin Milled are wedges which have the grooves milled out of the 8620 mild carbon steel face by a computer controlled milling machine. The main grooves are not the only milling, there are even smaller grooves milled into the rest of the club face by a circular cutting tool (see picture #2). I’ve covered this type of face milling a couple of times before on the MacGregor Vfoil irons and the Eidolon V-Sole wedges. There’s a milling pattern which is only a few thousandths of an inch in the face which gives the player even more spin and control over his shots. The combination of the main grooves and the fine milling of the face result in a contact area 30% greater than regular wegdges. More contact area means more feel, more spin, more control.

Hubba hubba. Natalie Gulbis 2007 Calendar

October 22nd, 2006

Natalie GulbisStopped by the Golf Babes Blog and saw this post on the new Natalie Gulbis 2007 calendar. Hmmm with all the talk about how the LPGA can sell more tix and generate more revenue I can’t help thinking this is one avenue. Oh but then again I don’t think the general public would want to see all of the LPGA players in sexy skimpy bikinis…

Doing this post made me decide to check out Natlie’s site since I probably haven’t been there since the 2006 calendar came out. Yes, just like last year it looks cool but has way too much flash animation.

It’s interesting to see what search terms people use to find posts. “Natalie Gulbis Nude” or “Natalie Gulbis Naked” or “Tiger Woods’ wife Elin naked” etc. There are some sick puppies out there. If I wanted to get a bunch more traffic I guess I’d post those terms… Oh, wait a sec… I just did hehe. ;-)

I’ll have to put a list together of some of the really bizarre search terms one of these days for some pure entertainment.

UPDATE: I just went back to the Golf Babes Blog. Heh, I couldn’t resist I guess. I’m looking at these beautiful women and thinking to myself “where the hell are these women when I’m golfing?” They’re not on the course. The only scantily clad people I see on the course are guys like this:

Nice reverse pivot. Now put your shirt on you moron…

Monster conquers New York, Philadelphia, Salt Lake, Denver

Alternate title: Ogio Monster Travel Bag Review

When it comes to the design and functionality of golf bags, backpacks and many other types of sporting bags, Ogio is arguably the most creative, progressive and hip company. I own several Ogio golf bags and I’ve been thrilled with the style, features and durability they all possess.

My Monster in some airport somewhere

No more soft travel bags for me

As my blogging and golf web endeavors grow and I do more and more course reviews, my need for a good golf travel bag has become imperative. A couple of years ago Delta Airlines destroyed one of my golf bags. When I tried to make my claim to get them to reimburse me for the damages Delta refused to pay, sighting new airline policies that they weren’t covering damages to golf clubs anymore. I fought Delta and actually won because their new policy didn’t spell out that damage to golf bags wasn’t covered.

At that point I realized how expensive a mishap at the airline baggage center could be:

$500.00 driver
$799.00 3W
$250.00 Hybrid
$1200.00 Irons
$600 worth of wedges
and a priceless putter.
Total: $3349.00+

If an airline were to trash my entire set of clubs I could be looking at close to a $3500.00 hit, not to mention the inconvenience of assembling a set that has taken me 2 years to put together. Given those thoughts I knew I’d used a soft golf bag for air travel for the last time. It was time to protect that $3K+ investment.
