Unfortunately I think I have a hernia

This sucks MAJOR. I moved last week. Unfortunately I moved some very heavy stuff I shouldn’t have and I believe I’m now paying the price.

I’ve never had a hernia before, but this has to be one. I can’t cough, sneeze or blow my nose without an extreme, sharp, burning pain just under my belly button. It’s getting worse, especially after I played drums in a recording session this evening.

So far it doesn’t hurt my golf swing but I’m afraid I’m going to need to go under the knife very soon. Calling the doc tomorrow.

🙁

I had inguinal hernia surgery last Wednesday. I had a larger than average one. I had no pain from the hernia prior to the surgery, so I can’t relate there. Pain from the surgery was mainly on the day of surgery. I was up and around pretty good the next day, though moving very carefully. I swung a club in the living room yesterday. Can’t turn the shoulders too much and I can’t apply any power. I hope to at least try hitting some balls at the range by next weekend.

    Good luck,

DON’T GOLF! Trust me, if this is a hernia and you put too much pressure on it, you will be in the most pain you have ever experienced. See the doctor before you do anything so you don’t jeopardize too much of the golf season.

Sorry to hear the bad news!

clmax what did they say the recovery time was?

By “recovery time” I assume you mean how long till I can play golf. My Doc is a golfer, and I am a Rocket Scientist (so he feels I should have good common sense (wife disagrees)) and he told me at least two weeks. He said that I should use the back yard and feel it out, and go when I feel ready.

Today I still have to move carefully, it hurts alot when I cough or, God forbid, sneeze. I get some sharp pains if I move from sitting to standing (or standing to sitting) too fast.

I have about a four inch cut, nine staples which will be coming out when I visit the Doc on Thursday.

I got my hernia while I was recovering from Acute Bronchitis (I made a semi-recent blog post about it) and tried to move a TV.

I played golf several times between getting the hernia and the surgery. Tha Doc said that was fine and it did not bother me on the course or off. I just knew I had it, and I could see the bulge.

Like I used to say in college, “It’s good to know someone a semester ahead”. Feel free to ask away if you have more questions. However, from your description,, I’m not convinced you have a hernia.

Well I have the sharp pain when I sneeze, cough or push with my stomach. Golf swing is ok. I have no bulge. I poke it with my fingers and it doesn’t hurt…

  6. Yeah, you should definitely get that checked out ASAP. You don’t want it to get worse. Even if it isn’t a hernia, it’s better to be safe than have your intestines ooze out of your belly button…
