Introducing THE GOLF SPACE

A little less than 2 months ago I was driving down the street when this new web site idea hit me. The thought blew me away so bad I almost drove off the road. The idea: Build a networking site like myspace for golf.
I couldn’t get home fast enough to start researching URLs for the new golf/myspace site. I was fortunate enough to register http://www.thegolfspace.com – The Golf Space. For the next 6-7 weeks I burned the candles at both ends building the site, getting opinions, finding cool modules etc.
What is THE GOLF SPACE?
The Golf Space is a “networking” site geared toward golf. Networking in this sense refers to the connection of friends, businesses and business associates. This is a similar concept to many social networking sites like myspace.com, tagworld.com, friendster.com, orkut.com etc. People or businesses register accounts and fill out profile information. They then become part of a network and can find people or other businesses with similar likes or interests.
Personal profiles
Each Golf Space user has his/her own personal profile. Within the profile is a ton of information about the user such as location, interests, matchmaker info, golf information (handicap, home course, lowest score, equipment list), what they’re there for (networking, friends, business, matchmaker etc), blog entries, forum posts, personal photos, visitors, connections and more.

Business profiles
The profiles at The Golf Space also have custom business fields for businesses in the golf industry and for golf courses. Businesses and golf courses can have their own home page where users or other businesses may read about them, see photos, establish connections etc.

Profile
The main profile section contains the user’s location, handicap, web site, bio, interests and what they are looking for at The Golf Space.
Connections
When a user finds another user or business they wish to associate with they can request a connection with them. A connection tells them you are interested in being their friend or associate. If the connection is accepted, both users’ connections tab within their main profile shows a thumbnail image of the corresponding connection. This is just like the friends section on myspace and many other networking sites.
Photos
Each user at The Golf Space has a personal profile photo which appears in their profile and in other locations on the site (posts, forums, featured profiles etc).
In addition to the profile photo each user has a personal photo gallery where many more photos may be uploaded and viewed publicly or set to private so only connections may view them.

Blogs
Each user at The Golf Space also has a personal blog. User blogs can be set to public or to private viewing by connections only. The blogging system at TGS isn’t the best currently, but it is fully functional and even has comments. A new blogging system is in development.

The user profile has a blog tab where you can see a listing of all the user’s blog posts.
Equipment
The equipment tab in the user profile is where the user can list his gear. There are several fields from driver to ball:

Business
The business tab has fields where personal users or businesses can input information about their business, their position and other relevant information.

Matchmaker
A great feature at The Golf Space is the matchmaker. If you’d like to find “that special someone” the matchmaker tab in the user profile has information such as gender, sexual preference, body type, smoking and drinking preference, height and more.

Users can search for their ultimate golf date by using the site’s browse function and checking the criteria they’d like to match up with in the matchmaker.
Recent visitors
If users are wondering who is checking out their profile, the recent visitors shows them. The recent visitors tab contains thumbnails of the visitor’s profile image, the visitor’s name, link to their profile, when they last visited and how many times they’ve visited.

User URL
Each user at The Golf Space has a custom URL. It consists of the golfspace.com plus the user’s username. Example: The user “tiger” would have the URL www.thegolfspace.com/tiger …cool eh?
Forum
The Golf Space has a user forum board. Yes, there are a million great golf forums already like The Sand Trap, Golf Discussions, My Golf Domain, Web Country Club etc… But since I CAN, I put a forum in.

Chat
The Golf Space has a chat room open 24/7. Users can meet each other there for online discussions.
There’s a weekly chat session scheduled for any who wish to attend on Sunday nights.
Private message system
The Golf Space has an internal private message system so users can send internal emails to each other.
Browse/Search
The Golf Space has an advanced user browsing capability. The browse function allows users to select certain profile information such as gender, location, interests etc. Use the browse to find a golf buddy, a personals match, a golf course or a business.

Links
Users may submit web links. These links can be to their own web sites, or to sites they feel other users of The Golf Space may find interesting. This section has the potential to be huge.

The Mental Game: We shape our own reality through positive thinking
I got my first two tournaments on the Futures Tour under my belt and I have to say that I am pleased with the results. I learned a lot about myself and my game over the last two weeks. I am excited to build on that for the rest of the year.
It’s a challenge playing out there on tour because you have to have the mental toughness week after week. It is a grind to play and practice all day, everyday.
After talking with my mental coach, Dr Joseph Parent, during both tournaments, I discovered that I was thinking way too much about my score which really determined how I played the last few holes of each round. In the next couple of weeks that I have off, I will be practicing the techniques that Doc suggested so that I will be even more prepared for my next event in Louisiana.
I was much more focused the first week at Cleveland Heights than I was at Summerfield the following week. I stayed in the present more often and felt like I was more aggressive. And the scores obviously proved it. After playing scared last week especially after making a 7 on the par-three 15th, I felt like I fought and bounced back; but I know that it had an affect on me the next day. This is why I need to learn how to immediately forget about the negative and focus only on the positive. And by the positive, I mean all the great drives I had, the pure iron shots I hit to only a few feet from the pin, those special chip-ins for birdie or those par saves that get you excited and rev up your adrenaline a bit.
I have learned a lot about the mechanics of the golf swing.
I have learned even more about the mental approach over the last few years and, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to stay mentally tough and be consistent week after week.
I am definitely up for the challenge and I am excited for my first year on tour. I have learned more than I thought I ever would in the last two weeks. Just think of how much I will have learned at the end of the year.
I’m going to end this blog entry with a quote from my favorite author from a book that I actually just finished reading. A quote that I will never forget: “I believe we shape our own reality through positive thinking.”

Who will win the 2006 Masters?
The new HOG poll is up. The Masters is 10 days, 8 hours and 3 minutes away. (I’m counting the seconds too, but decided not to post them)
Who will win the 2006 Masters? I’ve posted the “big five” players and the field. I could have made the poll ridiculously long with tons of players but I decided just to go with this setup.
Does Tiger win? Does he even attend? Phil hasn’t played all that well and neither has Ernie lately. Look out, Goosen was in 2nd at the TPC and 3 strokes ahead of 99.9% of the field. Speaking of the field, guys like Sergio are there….
Speaking of Sergio I’m going to say he WON’T win the Masters. He just can’t putt. If you can’t putt, you can’t with the Masters (or any Major for that matter).

Steven Ames to blow away the field at the TPC
“Which course is Ames playing?”
As I start this post I’m watching the TPC on my DVR. DVR’s are the single best invention ever for watching golf on TV.
Steven Ames is just about to tee off on #17. Normally I’d wait until the round is completed to write a post about this but Ames has such a huge lead he’d have to start throwing clubs into the water to run the risk of giving away the lead.
Ames is in THE ZONE. He’s making the rest of the field today at the TPC look like a bunch of hacks: Singh 77, Garcia 78, Weir 79…..Beem 85!
It’s almost official… Ames will be collecting a phat check of $1.4 million, a 5 year PGA Tour exeption, 2006 PGA invite, 2006 British invite and gets into The Masters for the next 3 years. Well done.
17 17 17
#17 had 57 balls in the water over the last 4 days. This hole is short and these are the best players in the world. Once again, it shows that it doesn’t take 492 yard par 4’s to make golf exciting.
TPC day 3 – lovin’ it
Man is this tournament at the TPC a ton of fun to watch or what? I love seeing a course that can make the likes of Jose Maria Olazabal throw a ball in the lake in disgust, Ian Poulter pound the ground in frustration and others mumbling to themselves over a 123 yard shot on 17.
Meltdowns
Jim Furyk started the day in first place but had a very strange round with only 5 pars and a crazy score card totaling 75.

Arron Oberholser was atop the leaderboard until he got to the little 123 yard 17th hole. He knocked his tee shot in the water and then 3-putted for a triple bogey. He carried that good karma onto 18 where he hooked his tee shot into the water en route to his 2nd 6 in a row and a tie for 17th going into Sunday.
A total of 8 players shot in the 80’s while most of the field was in the mid to upper 70’s.

With Augusta lengthening par threes to 240 yards (they’d better not touch #12) and many courses scrambling to add length, TPC Sawgrass shows that courses don’t need to be lengthened. #17 is a MEASLY 123 YARDS and it’s more exciting than a 490 yard par 4.
Faldo discusses Sabbatini’s sex life
Following a day where their group was put on the clock for slow play, Rory Sabbatini’s wife put on a shirt that said “keep up” in reference to the slow play of Nick Faldo.
The quick witted Faldo commented saying “It’s very embarrassing for them to bring their sexual problems to the course.”
