Tiger is undefeated in his 30’s

January 30th, 2006

Alternate titles for this post:
Tiger is undefeated in 2006
Tiger shoots even par to win, playoff included.
Tiger holds position as players gag around him.
Sergio and Pampling melt down.

The Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines has to be one of the most entertaining tournaments of the year. I don’ t quite know why. Maybe because the course is tough or more of the big stars play in it.

For the last few years the end of the tournament has been awesome. A couple of years ago it was John Daly hitting that amazing bunker shot on 18 and his two playoff opponents gagging on their putts. Last year on 18 Charles Howell could have won the tournament but his approach careened off the flag stick into the water. This year we get a 3 way playoff between Tiger, Jose Maria Olazabal and Nathan Green. Tiger wins the playoff by making two pars and watching his opponents make mistakes.

Golf blogs may take a new turn

January 29th, 2006

Browsing my HUGE golf blogroll I found an article and link which sparked my attention big time. Thanks to Golf With A Minnesota Twist for the link to a new golf blog. Yes I know, golf blogs are popping up faster than acne on a 13 year old girl these days. That’s why I started up The Golf Server. That’s another story…

This golf blog is different, and I see it as a very cool concept. It is the golf blog of The Raven at South Mountain, which is a golf course in Phoenix.

Post 600: Humorous shot of the day

January 29th, 2006

Man, could this really be the 600th post here?

On the 8th hole at Torrey Pines today Sergio Garcia launched a 7-iron into a hospitality tent. Sergio is about the best ball striker on tour so that is definitely an odd event. The kicker is that the hospitality tent was for Michelob Ultra, one of Sergio’s sponsors. The irony of it all…

After seeing just a server directory for quite some time there’s finally something at MJonGolf. It appears to be a default template for a photoblog. Perhaps we have an MJonGolf photoblog in the works…

John Daly’s wife goes to prison

January 28th, 2006

John Daly’s current wife checked into prison for a 5 month sentence this week. It seems that during the period 1996-2002 she was unloved in some illegal activities. These activities included an illegal drug ring and illegal gambling operations.

Daly apparently didn’t know about his wife’s “activities” because most of them took place before he met her in 2001.

This is a good reason to get to know your spouse before you marry him/her. Daly married his current wife after only knowing her for 7 weeks.

I lost a golf friend today to cancer

January 26th, 2006

At 3:30am this morning my good friend Bobby Drabner lost a 2.5 year battle to cancer. I’m paying a little tribute to my friend here.

Bobby Drabner

I’ve known Bobby for many years. He’s about 20 years older than me, but we became good friends through golf. We’ve probably played 200 rounds of golf together. Golf can bring people of different ages, backgrounds, ethnicity etc. together.

For about the last 4 years or so Bobby has been a member of the locally famous “Thursday group” which is one foursome that plays every Thursday here, provided there’s no snow on the ground. The Thursday group is as tight a group of buddies as you’ll find. Bobby has a picture perfect golf swing and on Thursdays I always stand directly behind him and look at his perfect swing plane. You can see from the picture here he’s already made contact but his eyes are still down.

About 2.5 years ago Bobby was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live. He made it past 6 months big time. Eventually we stopped calling him Bobby and started calling him “Miracle Man.” In the last year or so sometimes Bobby would miss a Thursday because he was too weak from the chemotherapy to play. Then the next week he’d be out on the course.

Each Thursday we’d get an update and he’d tell us the cancer was in his organs, then it would be in his bones, and finally it hit his brain.

Bobby was very healthy and took good care of himself during his life. He never ate any “bad” food. A great quote he said one day to me at the turn was “Fuck it. I’m eating a hot dog. That healthy food didn’t do shit for me.” That’s the way he was. He spoke his mind.

I played in many weekend tournaments and events with Bobby. The most notable was this last year’s club championship at Meadowbrook. Bobby and I played in the 27 hole club championship match. We weren’t playing against each other. I was an A flight finalist and he was a B flight finalist. We both rode together and gave each other moral support in the very stressful 27 hole matchplay event. I was very glad to have him there for me. It was my first championship match and I could hardly hold my breakfast down.

Though I was 2up after 18, I didn’t close the deal. But Bobby absolutely destroyed his opponent who was a good 25 years younger than him and knocked his drives 80 yards farther. He closed his opponent out with 6 holes to go. Keep in mind, this guy won a club championship 2 years after he should have died, and after at least a year of chemo. Simply amazing.

Tonight I’m going to crack open a bottle of wine and raise a glass in a toast to my good golfing friend. Here’s to you Bobby. I’ll truly miss you. You won’t be forgotten.
