Vijay Singh has withdrawn from this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship. He won’t be defending his 2004 DBC title due to suffering a back injury during a ping-pong game with his son. He’s consulting with his doctor and evaluating his upcoming schedule.

(This post is the final in the series about my experience at The Champion’s Challenge)
While following Jack Nicklaus around for a couple of hours at the Champion’s Challenge, my 8 year old daughter got a little ahead of us. She’s a skinny, bubbly, cute little ball of energy who can make friends anywhere…even with Roger Maltbe.
She’d been missing for a good hour by the time I made it back to the clubhouse. I found two security guys and asked if they had any lost little girls. They asked if she was the girl wearing the leopard skin shirt and skirt. I said “yes, now what has she done?” They proceed to tell me the Bill Murray story:

Brad Faxon fired a fabulous career low 61 in the final round today at the Buick Championship. That was only good enough to get him in into a tie for first with South Africa’s Tjaart van der Walt.
On the first and only playoff hole Faxon pulled his drive into the left fairway bunker and van der Walt launched one 300+ down the fairway. Advantage van der Walt? Nope. Faxon knocked an incredible bunker shot to within 2 feet of the hole. Not be be outdone, van der Walt nailed the flag on the fly with his approach shot. Tjaart was unable to convert his birdie allowing Faxon to win his first tournament since the 2001 Sony Open.
Though there was no Tiger, Phil or Vijay in this tournament, there was plenty of great golf to enjoy. Jason Gore didn’t necessarily provide any of that great golf, but he will soon.

Quick quiz: Which one of these pictures is a Sasquatch?

Nike has been working on a new driver. (Who hasn’t?) Their code name for the new driver was “Sasquatch.” Apparently Sasquatch is no longer a code name, it’s the production name. There’s a little preview of an ad for the Sasquatch driver on the Nike site.
Now, Nike knows just a tiny bit more about marketing than me I’ll admit, but this is a terribly dumb name for a driver. What’s next? “Hey Bob, check out ‘Nessie’ my new Nike Loch Ness Monster driver!”

The USGA has changed the rules regarding hole-in-one winnings. The max you used to be able to collect as an amateur was $750. Anything more than that (like a car or $1,000,000) would kill your amateur status if you accepted it.
They’ve now changed that rule and opened it up to no limit. So now you don’t have to turn down that new shiny car to keep your amateur status intact. Just make sure you don’t win that car before January 1, 2006. That’s when the rule change comes into play.
I had an acquaintance who won a car with a hole in one. He lost his amateur status and never played much golf after that. It ruined his amateur career.
Speaking of these hole-in-one for a car thoughts: You know what ticks me off is they give you a one year lease instead of giving you the car.

The newest HOGB poll is up and running! Let’s find out just how much dough you really spend on golf in one year. This is total golf expenses including gear, rounds, lessons, travel, ibuprophen, back doctor etc. Answer honestly. Your wife will never know…
How much do you spend on golf in one year?
Vote in the poll in the left column!
Less than $500
$500-$999
$1000-$2000
$2000-$3000
$4000-$5000
Over $5000
I’m going to say I’m in the “over $5000″ range. Heck one golf trip to Vegas with the buddies could cost a couple grand easy. Perhaps I should have put an “over $10,000″ range.

The latest poll results are in with some interesting demographic info about some of you HOGBers.
How many rounds of golf per month do you play? (peak season)
1-4 22%
5-9 33%
10-14 13%
15-19 8%
20 or more 22%
I’m pretty amazed at how much golf you’re playing out there. 33% of you play 5-9 times per month. And an amazing 22% play 20 or more times? Wow. True golf freaks. Welcome to the club.

I saw two amazing golf shots in my regular Thursday round. One good, one not so good.
Good
The good one was on the #1 handicap hole, a long par 4 with a big tree in the middle of the fairway. My pal knocked his 2nd shot in the hole from 190 yards.
Not so good
The 2nd amazing shot was my other buddy chipping onto the green on #18. I can’t even figure out how he did this. He double hit the ball which isn’t extremely strange. But the 2nd hit was on his recoil and he knocked the ball behind him with the back of his club!?? I could sit there with a bucket of 500 practice balls and never pull that off.

I was invited by some guys who work at my home course to go play a around with them Tuesday. They had some kind of free “corporate” pass at a “resort” course about an hour drive East of here in a town called Heber City.
When we got there the weather changed from sunny to a lightning fest with a cold rain. I had only an umbrella as I had my “Summer” bag. My Summer bag is a lighter bag with no rain gear in it. Summers here are dry and 90-105 degrees.
So we waited until the rain had almost stopped and then started our round. It was very cold and wet but we played through it. Finally on about the 5th green the bad weather blew over and it was nice and warm.
The chap who invited me grabbed my cell phone and called the pro shop and asked if we could start our round over since the weather was so bad when we started. They had no problem with that. The chap was so unhappy with his round that he wanted to just start over. I’ve never done that before but since I was their guest, and I hit the same house on one hole twice, I went along with it. So we got in about 23 holes and it was quite fun.
That’s one hell of a mulligan.
