There was NO surprise that Hale Irwin won the Turtle Bay tonight. He’s only won it 5 times in a row now.
I was surprised that Justin Leonard won the Bob Hope Chrystler Championship. The tournament was Joe Ogilvy’s to win but a 73 ruined that idea. Everyone is making a big deal out of Justin switching to Nike gear. He’s apparently one of the few who actually IMPROVES after doing that! But he made tons of putts and if you have a keen eye, his putter is a TITLEIST.
As a Ben Hogan fan, it is strange to see the swoosh on Justin’s hat.
Speaking of Nike…David Duval was 32 over after 4 rounds??? I swear I could beat him right now.

Played golf today. The weather forecast was for a high of 43 and 5mph winds. The weatherman was wrong. It was very cold, windy and for holes 2-4 it snowed. My hands were frozen.
When we got to the 5th tee I told my 3 buddies I was done. Since that hole was going back toward the clubhouse we decided to play it and see if the weather got any better. What do you know…by the time we putted out the sky was blue. It was still very cold and VERY windy though.
So we struggled through the rest of the 18 cold holes, paid our bets and went home.
It is very hard to play in those conditions. What makes it even harder is trying to make a full swing with a t-shirt, long sleeve shirt, vest, sweatshirt, and rain jacket on. Man that’s 5 layers.
It was good to make some Winter swings and hopefully stay loose. But the golf was very bad.

Golfing here tomorrow! They have a funky deal for the winter. Your green fee is 1/2 the previous day’s temperature in dollars!
7,728 yards though….give me a break.

Joe Ogilvy is -17 after two rounds. Na, these course aren’t too easy for the pros.

The Hope is basically a shootout. If you like seeing low numbers, this one is for you. But what I DON’T like is watching freaking Michael Bolton golf. I’ll have to keep my distance on this one.

The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic starts today. The pros just eat up these easy courses in this tournament. They go loooowww.
This reminds me of my favorite Gary McCord quote during this tournment a year or two ago:
“Aim low sheriff, aim low. For the midgets are riding shetland ponies.”

Tiger must be relieved. He finally won a strokeplay event after going through a 15 month dry spell. He did win one event last year but that was the match play at La Costa.
Speaking of La Costa, I’ll be doing a course review of La Costa in the reviews section of Web Country Club soon.
Luke Donald was in the unt until he pulled a drive into the left hazard. Tom Lehman was in the hunt until he made some bogies down the stretch.
Tiger was LUCKY to birdie the 18th after flaring his 2nd shot right of the greenside water hazard.

The high today was 36 with the “inversion” that we get here. It was very chilly. My buddies have contacted me and invited me to golf tomorrow (Sunday). If it is 36 again I’m going to bail. It is not that fun to hit a frozen ball with a 3i a little off center. The pain goes straight to your hands.

So for the 2nd time this January I was able to play a round of golf! I played at one of my favorite courses with 3 buddies today. I had little expectations because after all I’ve played one round in the last 6+ weeks with 1 bucket.
So I go out and shoot 71 (par 72)!!! What the…? My buddies had to break open the wallets today!
Nice surprise today. Kind of like when you put on a jacket you haven’t worn for 4 months and you find a $50 bill in it.
Day one of Torrey Pines is today. Trying fantasy golf this year so go Vijay!

You don’t get to golf much here in Salt Lake in January. Usually there are a couple of feet of snow on the ground this time of year. But the temp got up to the upper 40’s last weekend.
For the first time this year I hit a bucket of balls last Saturday. Most of the clubs in the bag still worked moderately. The long irons (3, 4) were not quite working but that is to be expected. Those only work when you’re right on anyway. I didn’t get to hit more than 5-10 full buckets last year because of the terrible tennis elbow I got working on my basement. No more basement work, it’s killing my golf game! Happily I didn’t aggrivate my tennis elbow. I hope this year I can actually PRACTICE.
Sunday I got together with 2 other buddies, hit a few range balls (poorly), and played 18 holes. On the range I didn’t hit them quite as well Sunday as I did Saturday. I may have been a little tight or just expecting too much. During the round there were a few terrible swings, which on this course mean adios ProV1. I did have a birdie and a few pars (let’s not mention the “others”).
Lost 1 buck to each dude so it could have been much worse. It looks like my Thursday group will try to get together for the first time this year at one of my favorite courses: Bonneville.
With a golf trip to southern Utah with 20 guys or so lined up for the first week of Feb, being able to hit a few buckets and play a couple of rounds will help immensely. The southern Utah trip can be a costly trip bet-wise if you play poorly.
Looking forward to the Torrey Pines tournament this week by the way. That finish last year with John Daly making the best sand shot I’ve seen in years was awesome. On the playoff both the other two players were inside 5 or 6 feet for birdie and JD knocks a 60 foot downhill sand shot to about 1 foot. He makes birdie and the other to players choke on their birdie putts to hand the tourney to JD. JD’s driving was awesome but when he wins, his short game is what does it for him…
